“From self-doubt to self-discovery, my journey as a coach on the ‘Design Your Life’ Podcast has been nothing short of transformative. What started as a leap outside my comfort zone has become a weekly highlight, where laughter, insight, and encouragement blend into something I never knew I needed.” You can Find Inspiration Through the *Design Your Life* Podcast and encouragement.
The *Design Your Life* Podcast has quickly become one of my absolute favorite parts of being a coach at Carina Gardner’s Design Suite. Specifically, the *Coaches Unfiltered* segment. It has brought me an unexpected amount of joy and as a result, I have found inspiration and encouragement through the Design Your Life Podcast with Carina Gardner. If you had told me a year ago that I’d be on a podcast, I would have laughed and said, “You’re nuts!” I mean, I’m a born-and-bred, sweet tea-drinking Southern girl with a strong Southern accent that I’ve always been a little self-conscious about. The idea of broadcasting my voice to the world? I never thought I’d want to do that. And besides, who would even care what I had to say?
Well, let me tell you—saying “yes” to Carina’s invitation has been one of the best decisions I’ve made. Being part of the Design Your Life Podcast has been a deeply rewarding experience. Each episode brings something meaningful into my life, and believe me, I hear *every* episode. I’m literally paid to listen! But here’s the thing—I don’t just listen because it’s part of my job. I genuinely look forward to it. You can find inspiration through the insights Carina always has, and I get so excited to hear her thoughts. Then, after I’ve soaked it all in, I get to chat with Julie about it on the *Coaches Unfiltered* segment. Before we know it, we’ve been talking for 20 minutes, and it feels like no time has passed at all.
What I love most about the Design Your Life Podcast is how it’s never the same twice. Carina covers such a wide range of topics—from practical business strategies that help us grow as designers to personal stories that make her so relatable. I especially Find Inspiration Through the *Design Your Life* Podcast and those stories! She’s even willing to pull back the curtain on some of the inner workings of the Design Suite, which I know a lot of listeners really appreciate. And don’t even get me started on the book recommendations! I think I’ve read almost every book she’s suggested, and every single one has been worth the time. It’s amazing how much I’ve learned, not just in my career, but on a personal level too.
As a designer, it’s easy to feel a little isolated. We often work from home, spending long stretches of time alone with our projects. That’s one reason the Design Your Life Podcast has been such a lifeline for me. Hearing Carina share her experiences—the highs and the struggles—has reminded me that I’m not alone in this. So many of the challenges I face are the same ones she has encountered. That connection, that sense of shared experience, has been so encouraging and uplifting. It’s like having a mentor right in my ear, cheering me on and reminding me that I’m on the right path.
Carina has a gift for encouragement. Every now and then, she’ll dedicate an entire episode to lifting people up, and it feels like she’s speaking directly to me. That’s the beauty of podcasts, isn’t it? They’re always there when you need them, like a good friend you can turn to when you’re feeling down. Whether I need a little pep talk, fresh ideas, or just a reminder that I’m not out here on my own, the *Design Your Life* Podcast is always there for me.
For me, it’s not just something I listen to; it’s a weekly highlight. It’s a constant source of inspiration, motivation, and community. I hope that it continues to reach and inspire others in the same way it has for me. If you haven’t tuned in yet, I can’t recommend it enough. Find Inspiration Through the *Design Your Life* Podcast, it just might become a favorite part of your week, too.
Merry Christmas, fellow designers, makers, crafters, and creators! The tree is twinkling, the stockings are stuffed, and now it’s time to treat yourself to something that will keep the creativity alive all year long. Got some Christmas cash burning a hole in your pocket? We’ve got the perfect way to spend it—on YOU and your passion for design, crafting, and creativity! Turn your 2024 Christmas cash into creativity!

Why Make Art That Sells is a Must-Read for Artists
If you’re looking to grow your art career, Make Art That Sells is the book that can transform your journey. The moment I picked it up, I knew this compact book held the key to unlocking the potential of my creative work. Written by Carina Gardner, Make Art That Sells not only provides practical advice but also challenges the outdated “starving artist” myth. As someone who once believed in that myth, I can say this book was truly a game-changer.
Right from the start, Make Art That Sells offers clear, actionable steps to build a thriving art business. It’s designed for artists at every stage, whether you’re just starting or looking to expand. I personally began reading this book when I was still figuring out how to turn my artistic passion into something more than a hobby. The book walked me through each stage of the journey, from identifying my unique style to targeting the right audience.
One of the standout features of Make Art That Sells is the formula that Carina introduces. This formula enabled me to see my art through the lens of a business, rather than just as creative expression. In doing so, it helped me evaluate my work critically and identify new market opportunities. More importantly, the book taught me how to ask myself essential questions: What medium best suits my work? What themes resonate with my audience? These questions became the foundation for defining my own artistic voice.
Additionally, Carina’s step-by-step guidance makes the process of selling art feel attainable. She breaks down the complexities of the art market into bite-sized, actionable strategies. Whether you’re focused on painting, digital art, or another medium, you’ll learn how to position your work for success. One of my favorite aspects of the book is how Carina simplifies what can often feel like an overwhelming process, helping you see the bigger picture of your art business.
For me, the Make Art That Sells formula was a major turning point. It completely shifted how I approach my art career. Before, I saw my creative work as something separate from business—now I view it as an integral part of a sustainable career. I no longer feel like I have to sacrifice financial stability to do what I love. Instead, the book has helped me build a bridge between passion and profit.
Looking back, I realize how much Make Art That Sells has influenced my path as a designer. It’s not just a book—it’s a roadmap that helped me gain clarity about my goals, my audience, and how to grow a successful business. It also reignited my joy for creating, knowing that my art can both inspire and sustain me.
If you’re ready to take your art to the next level, Make Art That Sells is the perfect companion. It equips you with the tools and mindset needed to turn your creative dreams into a thriving, meaningful business. And that, in my experience, has been priceless.

For me, Halloween is a two-month season that kicks off in September, and it’s full of family traditions.
One of our favorites is watching all the Harry Potter movies from start to finish every fall. While Harry Potter isn’t strictly a Halloween thing (you could argue it fits Christmas, too), we love the magic of those movies. The witch and wizard theme makes them a perfect fit for our fall movie list.
Movie I Love
Our movie list also includes Hocus Pocus and sometimes the Halloweentown movies (anyone remember the mom as April from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?). Sadly, my kids have outgrown Halloweentown a bit.
A few years ago, the new Muppets Haunted Mansion movie became a must-watch for me. I’m a sucker for all things Muppets, and Will Arnett is so fun in this version. Plus, I love grooving to Dancing in the Moonlight.
Finally, if you’ve listened to my podcast (link), you know I’m obsessed with handing out candy and watching The Wizard of Ozon Halloween night. It’s a tradition my kids love to tease me about. Sometimes, I’ll throw in Meet Me in St. Louis because one Judy Garland movie just isn’t enough, and it helps me get into the Christmas spirit. Plus, who can resist little Tootie throwing flour in Mr. Braukoff’s face?
Potion parties have been replaced by corn mazes, Frightmares at Lagoon, and painting pumpkins (I hate making jack o’lanterns). And when I can make it happen, I also really love Oogie Boogie Nights at Disneyland.
And of course, I LOVE crafting for Halloween. I love making villages, decor items, and gifts. For me crafting at Halloween is always a good tradition to have.
What are your family traditions? What makes fall a special time for you?

In Episode 463, Carina explores how everyday habits help foster creativity. She believes creativity isn’t just a talent; it’s a way of living. It’s about making time for yourself to relax and let ideas flow naturally.
Relaxation Boosts Creativity
Carina emphasizes the importance of taking time to unwind. For her, reading fiction has become a way to relax. She started reading regularly about five months ago and finds that it gives her mind a break, helping her creativity recharge.
Another surprising source of inspiration for Carina is watching Martha Cooks. The show’s humor and calm pace help her disconnect and relax, which allows her to think more creatively. It’s a reminder that creativity can come from the most unexpected places.
The Importance of “Me Time”
Carina highlights that to be more creative, we must intentionally create space for ourselves. Whether it’s through reading, watching a show, or any activity that makes you laugh or relax, these moments allow your brain to recharge and spark new ideas.
Finding Your Creative Spark
The episode encourages you to discover your own “Mickey Mouse moment”—a simple activity that brings joy and helps you relax. This can be the key to unlocking your creativity in everyday life.
Carina’s message is simple: making time to relax is just as important for creativity as any formal practice. So, what helps you unwind and spark your creativity?

Learn more about how life is could be with a design business from women who have flexibility and freedom while being creative. On day 3 Design Suite Maker Conference, I met withJalin Bingham, Kristi Rachelle, Emily Fish to talk about their lives as they started their design businesses.
Each of them hosted a workshop at the Design Suite Maker Conference, and I was thrilled to have them share their experiences as design business owners. It was fascinating to explore their unique journeys, which also had some surprising similarities.
During the panel, we found ourselves discussing our children, as each of us has kids who’ve faced challenges at school due to neurodivergent issues like ADHD, autism, mental health struggles, and more. Knowing that there is power in creativity, these struggles do not stop these women from pursuing their own creative lives and careers.
Understanding the challenges of everyday life gives perspective as you build a business. While creativity and fulfillment are key, involving your family is also important. Kristi’s daughter even steals her iPad and has started her own design business, while Emily’s son works for her. “This is more than me just making cute crafts,” Kristi says. “It’s about creating a legacy for my kids.”
Sometimes just hearing from other women and seeing their real life struggles and how they continue to pursue a creative business is a motivating thing for others to see.

On day 2 Design Suite Maker Conference, I met withBrenna Powell, Tracey Rinaldo, Kim Thomas to talk about the best and worst parts of owning a business. Learn from these women about creating profitable design business doing the work they love.
Brenna Powell says overcoming the fear of whether her work would sell was a big challenge. “When I started Design Suite, I was super nervous because I would post my stuff on Etsy and someone would buy it. And I would be like—Oh they are going to come to me with these negative reviews…I wanted to make sure that I was doing things the right way.”
Design Suite member Kim Thomas says that it is a journey. She says, “I knew that this second year would be all about the business, the marketing, and the sales.”
Tracy Rinaldo says the hardest part of running a design business is staying focused. As creatives, there’s so much we want to do, but to build a profitable business, it’s crucial to focus on the right products and activities.

I had a wonderful opportunity to talk with Design Suite members Tiffani Hawkins, Viveca Chenoweth, and Jennifer Burba in a live panel for the Design Suite Maker Conferenceabout their design businesses, shops, and why they decided to start their own design businesses.
Every woman’s journey is unique, and their circumstances vary. For example, Viveca is retired and spends her time being creative and growing her shops. Tiffani, a passionate crafter, works full-time and builds her design business in the evenings and on weekends. Jennifer is a stay-at-home mom who’s also finishing her Bachelor’s degree (find out how many kids she has in the YouTube video).
Despite their different life circumstances, each of them is actively building their own design business.
In this panel, they’ll share what they love and what they find most challenging. Get a behind-the-scenes look at the real lives of women working hard to make their dreams a reality.
Learn how to develop a product, brand, and style from a live presentation from Carina Gardner. At the Design Suite Maker Conference, I gave a live keynote on how to develop a product, aimed at helping budding designers find their style and build a brand.
I introduced two frameworks to guide attendees through the process. The first was the Make Art That Sells model from the book. I focused on how using medium, theme, and product can help you stand out in the marketplace.
The second was the Good, Better, Best framework from my book Design Profit Prosper. The idea is that with so many products available, yours must excel in both usability and beauty. This approach not only helps you build a recognisable brand but also ensures your products sell—making your business truly viable.

Recently I was in Japan and did several Design Around the World videos so you could get a sense of the graphic design in the country.
Hope you enjoy this count down!
Cat Bus
At the Studio Ghibli Park in Nagoya, I stumbled upon a life-sized replica of the Cat Bus from My Neighbor Totoro. Imagine my surprise when I walked into the room and found this massive, whimsical bus that my entire family could climb aboard for photos! The entire park is a treasure trove of design inspiration, full of vibrant colors and beloved characters, but the Cat Bus in the Grand Warehouse truly stole the show.
Tokyo Station Hotel
The Tokyo Station Hotel is more than just a place to stay—it’s a masterpiece of design and architecture. Overlooking the historic train station, our room offered stunning views and the breakfast room featured breathtaking chandeliers. The hallways were adorned with beautiful artwork, making it a must-visit for any designer seeking luxurious inspiration.
Golden temple in Kyoto
After visiting a couple of temples earlier in the day, the Golden Pavilion in Kyoto left a lasting impression with its dazzling gold leaf exterior. The surrounding grounds are equally stunning, offering multiple vantage points to take in this architectural marvel. If you’re an architecture enthusiast, this temple is a must-see. It’s even more breathtaking in person—no video can truly capture its beauty.
Non Mickey Mouse DisneySea
We took our kids to DisneySea, and I was amazed to discover an entire world filled with characters I’d never seen before. Unlike the usual Mickey Mouse-themed attractions, this park features Mickey and Minnie’s adorable stuffed animal friends as the stars. You’ll find these beloved characters everywhere, replacing the traditional Mickey ears with something uniquely Japanese.
Bathrooms!
This might surprise you, but the bathrooms in Japan were one of the biggest highlights of my trip! For first-time visitors, the cleanliness, design, and functionality are nothing short of astounding. From the informative signage to the high-tech bidets, every bathroom—from public restrooms to hotel facilities—was immaculately designed. Some even had stylish wallpaper and other decorative touches. It was a delightful surprise that I wasn’t expecting!
What about you? Have you been to Japan? What surprising designs or experiences did you encounter? Share your thoughts in the comments!

In the Make + Design Podcast, a hidden gem from February 2022 titled “How I Have Used Journaling To Take My Design Work To The Next Level”, reveals strategies that Carina uses, which can become the catalyst for your future design projects.Carina starts out the episode by giving an example of how journaling helped her create a new fabric line. It is important to notice that this is a big project, not a small every-day craft. Carina uses journaling for her big projects only, since they require more work. The key to this journaling was using it as a way of “mapping out” her ideas.
When you map out a big project, you allow your brain to dump out many ideas you wouldn’t normally think of. The act of writing ideas on paper gives you the clarity and direction you need for when you go to the action of creating the actual project.
Carina explained that the actual fabric line produced does not often look like what the “map out” was, which is okay! The whole point of mapping out is to brainstorm and revise your project to the best version it can be, which is what the final product becomes.
If you are ever stuck at the starting point of a big creative project you have, journaling and “mapping out”, is your key to moving forward.

Curious about what goes down at a Design Suite Team Retreat? Here’s a peek into the blend of work and play that makes our yearly gathering so special!
Each year, the Design Suite leadership team and our dedicated coaches come together for a retreat that serves as a pivotal planning session for the year ahead. This August 2024, we convened with one goal in mind: to shape an exciting and innovative year for our members in 2025. We meticulously crafted the full calendar of Design Suite events, ensuring a dynamic mix of virtual and in-person experiences that promise to enrich and engage.
This year’s retreat was especially notable for the seamless collaboration between our U.S. team and our colleagues in the Philippines. Thanks to Zoom, our team across the globe joined us in real-time, contributing to team-building exercises and performance improvement discussions. This virtual connection allowed us to align on program planning and share valuable insights, further strengthening our global team’s cohesion and ensuring a unified approach to our 2025 initiatives. Our retreat wasn’t all about strategizing and meetings. We took valuable time to review member feedback and brainstorm program enhancements. Our mission is clear: to deliver top-tier educational and networking opportunities that will empower our members to become exceptional designers. We’re thrilled about the changes we’re implementing and can’t wait to share them with you!
Of course, no retreat is complete without a bit of fun. This year, we embraced our playful side with a new card game that had us all laughing—and yes, we played in our pajamas between sessions! We also enjoyed the great outdoors with activities like pickleball, kayaking, and paddleboarding at the picturesque Bear Lake, Utah. And who could forget the classic burger and shake feast at the local roadside stand? To top it all off, we even had a friendly pool tournament, proving that our team’s competitive spirit is just as strong off the clock.
Our Philippine team also made the most of their time by exploring local attractions and enjoying their beautiful surroundings. They spent a day at a vibrant amusement park, having fun with their families on various rides and activities. This blend of adventure and relaxation was a perfect complement to their hard work on the Design Suite team!
The retreat was a perfect blend of productive planning and memorable moments. We returned invigorated and ready to make 2025 an exceptional year for the Design Suite community. Stay tuned for all the exciting developments on the horizon
Maybe one of the coolest things I get to do are live Design BootcampsTeaching live means that I get to interact with new bootcampers and answer their questions about design business.
It’s not surprising that many of the same questions pop up time and time again at a bootcamp like…
“Is there really room for ME in this industry?”
“Do I have to know how to draw to become a designer?”
“How do you make money as a designer?”
And I love answering these! Design Bootcamp is really about understanding strategies that successful designers are using and which ones are not.
This five day bootcamp occurs for one hour a day at 10am MT/12pm ET. Plus there are two bonus videos to help you get started on designing in Illustrator.
If you can’t come to the live class, a replay is available for two weeks so you can still watch.
Oh, and I also talk about Design Suite, which is my
premier program as well as the University of Arts & Design. I usually talk about these on Day 3 only to those who would like to learn more (it is not part of our workshop series).
A great podcast gem from the Make + Design Podcast is Episode 65 which was created back in November 2021. Carina titled this episode “Does The Design World Need Your Style?”
In Carina’s Design Bootcamp, she is frequently asked the question, “Will my particular style work in the marketplace?” and the answer is a definite yes! Carina has worked with hundreds of designers that are into very specific things, which makes their work unique.
Usually if you like it, there is someone else out there who likes it as well. The small markets exist, and Carina explains that they can be even better than the broad markets. This is because you will know your people on a more personal level. The artwork you create will resonate with them much deeper.
Sometimes the only thing standing in your way of successful sales is the confidence in putting your work out there. Carina explains the lack of an abundance mentality that designers need to have. There is enough room for you, your styles, and your designs!
Carina closes this podcast episode by encouraging all of us to embrace the unique style we have. With correct strategies, you can have success in selling your designs, no matter how unique or specific they are.

This article dives into three insightful podcast episodes that explore essential strategies for creative professionals. From the value of investing in your network, to the transition from interior design to the fabric industry, and the unexpected sources of creative inspiration, these episodes offer valuable lessons for anyone looking to enhance their career and creativity. Whether you’re seeking industry insights, exploring new creative paths, or simply looking to spark your imagination, these discussions provide practical advice and inspiration to keep you moving forward.
In this episode, Carina addresses a common question from live bootcamps: how to get the inside scoop without an established network. The advice is straightforward but often overlooked—you have to “pay to play.” This means investing in your career by attending shows, networking, joining programs, and immersing yourself in the industry. By doing so, you gain valuable insights and build connections with key players like buyers and manufacturers. The episode emphasizes that many creatives miss out simply because they hesitate to put themselves out there, making this commitment crucial for success.
In this episode, Stephanie Socha, host of the Make and Decorate podcast, shares her journey from interior design to exploring the world of patterns, hand stitching, and fabrics. With over seven years of podcasting experience, Stephanie discusses how her show has not only showcased her design work but also helped her build a strong network. She details her recent transition into the fabric industry and how podcasting has played a key role in connecting her with the right people and opportunities.
In this episode, Carina delves into the importance of operating from a place of creativity. She explores how different influences—like fiction, cooking shows like Martha Cooks, and even Disney’s Mickey Mouse—can inspire and fuel our creative processes. Carina encourages listeners to examine their habits and routines, emphasizing the value of maintaining a positive and creative mindset in both work and life.
We’re thrilled to welcome our very first cohort of students to the University of Arts & Design! This inaugural group is made up of eager Master of Arts students and ambitious learners pursuing Undergraduate Design Certificates. As they embark on this exciting journey, we’re just as excited to see the unique perspectives they bring as they sharpen their design and business skills.
Imagine the creativity and innovation these students will unleash as they dive into their studies. My visit to the Osaka Aquarium and Osaka Castle turned into an unforgettable double excursion that we squeezed into a single day while in Japan. Initially, I hadn’t planned on stopping in Osaka, but as soon as my daughter discovered that the aquarium had whale sharks, it became a must-visit for our family.
The YouTube video I made about this trip doesn’t fully capture how amazing the aquarium is. The graphic design work was top-notch, with detailed information about all the animals and marine life, and the visuals were stunningly beautiful.
Osaka Aquarium houses not one, but two whale sharks.
The aquarium itself was a masterpiece of design, with beautifully illustrated maps and signage guiding us through the exhibits. The experience kicked off with an immersive underwater tunnel, making us feel as though we were walking on the ocean floor among colorful fish and rays.
As we ascended through the aquarium, we encountered playful otters, seals, penguins, and, of course, the whale sharks. The Pacific Ocean Tank, where these gentle giants swim, was awe-inspiring. Standing before the enormous cylindrical tank, we were captivated by the graceful movements of the whale sharks and the variety of other marine life. The experience felt truly immersive, as if we were right there in the ocean with them.
After enjoying some blue whale ice cream—a fitting treat given our surroundings—we continued through the aquarium, exploring jellyfish exhibits and Arctic marine life. Even the aquarium’s restrooms were noteworthy, with creative designs that kept the immersive experience going. The gift shop was our final stop, where my kids eagerly picked out whale shark plushies as souvenirs.
In the afternoon, after a brief rest at our hotel, my husband and I decided to visit Osaka Castle. This was our only outing without the kids, who needed some downtime since this was definitely a go-go-go trip to Japan.
The walk there was a delightful mix of modern cityscape and historical architecture. We couldn’t resist stopping for a quick snack, which made me feel like Chihiro from “Spirited Away.” There is a huge contrast between the traditional stone walls and moats of the castle against the backdrop of modern Osaka.
Exploring the castle was a journey through time, with each level offering insights into its rich history. Artifacts like letters, armor, and swords brought the past to life, and the intricate design and craftsmanship of the castle were awe-inspiring. The panoramic view from the top was the perfect end to our visit, offering a serene moment of reflection as we looked out over the lush greenery and urban landscape of Osaka.
Before heading back to our hotel, we explored a nearby building filled with shops and eateries, where I tried an adventurous dish: beef and mashed potatoes i
n an ice cream cone. While it wasn’t quite what I expected, it was a fun experiment to cap off an unforgettable day.
Our day in Osaka was a whirlwind of discovery, blending the beauty of marine life with the rich history of Japan. It’s a city that left a lasting impression, and I highly recommend making time to explore it if you ever find yourself in Japan.
Also if you want to see me eating a mashed potato ice cream cone, that at the end of the youtube video!
