Your Possibilities 6 x 9 Hardbound Notebook

The Possibilities 6 in. x 9 in. hardbound notebook has completely transformed how I embrace my year of dreaming big, setting goals, and exploring new opportunities. While digital tools and printables are great, I quickly realized I wanted something more. That’s when I decided to create a 6×9 hardbound book—a journal that would help me stay inspired no matter where I go.

Why Choose a Hardbound Book?

At first, I considered sticking with digital options, but I knew I needed something more tangible. I already created some digital options here. A Possibilities notebook not only provides a structured space for reflection but also offers a sense of permanence that digital files sometimes lack.

Moreover, having a durable and portable book means I can take it with me wherever I go. Whether I’m at a coffee shop, traveling, or simply sitting at home, this guided reflection book keeps all my ideas in one place. Plus, there’s something special about physically writing things down—it makes goal-setting and reflection feel even more intentional.

What’s Inside the Possibilities Hardbound Notebook?

To make this book as useful as possible, I carefully structured it to balance guidance and flexibility. Inside, you’ll discover:

20 sections, each with six thought-provoking questions
Bucket list pages to inspire big dreams and exciting goals
Journaling pages for reflection, creativity, and personal insights
A beautifully designed layout to make the experience enjoyable

Each section is thoughtfully designed to help you gain clarity, explore new ideas, and take meaningful action. Whether you’re brainstorming future projects, setting life goals, or simply reflecting on the day, this goal-setting notebook gives you the perfect space to do it.

Making It Available Through Amazon

Once I completed the design, I wanted to ensure that anyone who wanted a copy could get one easily. Instead of dealing with large print runs and shipping logistics, I decided to self-publish through Amazon. This way, the book is always available, and you can order it anytime without worrying about stock limitations.

Additionally, Amazon’s print-on-demand service ensures that each book is printed fresh and shipped directly to you, making the process seamless and hassle-free. I show some of putting it up on Amazon in the youtube video (link).

How I Designed This Guided Journal

Of course, designing this book was one of the most exciting parts of the process! I used a combination of Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator to bring everything together. First, I created the layout in InDesign. This ensured that each page was clean, visually appealing, and easy to use. Then, I incorporated artwork and refined the details using Illustrator and Photoshop.

For those who love seeing the behind-the-scenes process, I’ve created a video walkthrough where I show exactly how I designed it. Watch the full video here: (link)

If you’re ready to start your own Possibilities Year, you can grab your copy today! I’ve also gathered all my Possibilities Year videos and resources in one place, so you can explore more about this exciting journey. Find out more about that by going to www.designsuitecourses.com/dailyplanner.

I truly believe that when we take the time to write down our dreams, set goals, and reflect on our journey, amazing things happen. This notebook is more than just a journal. It’s a tool to help you unlock new opportunities and create a life filled with purpose. I hope it inspires you as much as it has inspired me!Want to watch more of the possibility videos? Design Your Own Possibilities Printables – A Creative Guide

I’ve always loved dreaming big, setting goals, and exploring new possibilities. That’s why, when I started building my possibilities printables set, I knew it needed to be more than just a planner. Instead, it had to be a guide for intentional living. From the start, this project felt like an invitation to imagine, plan, and take action. In fact, I even created a full video on my initial design process—watch it here.

A Printable Set Designed for Possibilities

To bring the magic of the possibilities printables set into daily life, I carefully designed a 20-page printable collection that blends beauty with functionality. Not only does it help with organization, but it also serves as a tool for self-discovery and transformation.

Inside, you’ll find 20 sections, each containing five thought-provoking questions to help you:
✔ Discover what truly excites you
✔ Identify opportunities you might be overlooking
✔ Gain clarity on what you want to create
✔ Take real, actionable steps toward your dreams

Because of this structure, it’s more than just a planner—it’s a roadmap to personal growth.

I’ve always loved dreaming big, setting goals, and exploring new possibilities, Carina Gardner and Year of Possibilities, Printables

Blending Old & New Art

When creating this project, I knew the visual elements needed to be just as inspiring as the content itself. For this reason, I decided to mix old designs with new illustrations created in Illustrator on the iPad. This blend of past and present artwork gave the final product a unique and meaningful touch.

Furthermore, to ensure a polished and professional layout, I built the entire possibilities printables set in Adobe InDesign. As a result, the pages are not only beautiful but also easy to use. If you enjoy seeing behind-the-scenes design work, you’ll love my Sweet Life of a Designer video—watch it here.

Want to Grab These Printables?

If you’re ready to explore your own possibilities, you can download the printables set and find all related resources in one convenient place: www.designsuitecourses.com/dailyplanner.

Ultimately, writing down dreams, reflecting on choices, and exploring creativity opens the door to new opportunities. Because of that, I poured my heart into this project, and I hope it helps you unlock fresh possibilities in your own life

Learn About How Life Could Be With A Design Business

Learn more about how life is could be with a design business from women who have flexibility and freedom while being creative. On day 3 Design Suite Maker Conference, I met with Jalin Bingham, Kristi Rachelle, Emily Fish to talk about their lives as they started their design businesses.

Learn more about how life is could be with a design business from women who love flexibility and freedom while being creative.

Each of them hosted a workshop at the Design Suite Maker Conference, and I was thrilled to have them share their experiences as design business owners. It was fascinating to explore their unique journeys, which also had some surprising similarities.

During the panel, we found ourselves discussing our children, as each of us has kids who’ve faced challenges at school due to neurodivergent issues like ADHD, autism, mental health struggles, and more. Knowing that there is power in creativity, these struggles do not stop these women from pursuing their own creative lives and careers.

Understanding the challenges of everyday life gives perspective as you build a business. While creativity and fulfillment are key, involving your family is also important. Kristi’s daughter even steals her iPad and has started her own design business, while Emily’s son works for her. “This is more than me just making cute crafts,” Kristi says. “It’s about creating a legacy for my kids.”Carina Gardner on Life with a Design Business and the power of creativity

The Best and Worst Secrets of Creating A Creative Design Business

On day 2 Design Suite Maker Conference, I met with Brenna Powell, Tracey Rinaldo, Kim Thomas to talk about the best and worst parts of owning a business. Learn from these  women about creating profitable design business doing the work they love.

Learn about the best and worst parts of owning a design business from women who are going full force after their creative careers

Brenna Powell says overcoming the fear of whether her work would sell was a big challenge. “When I started Design Suite, I was super nervous because I would post my stuff on Etsy and someone would buy it. And I would be like—Oh they are going to come to me with these negative reviews…I wanted to make sure that I was doing things the right way.”

Design Suite member Kim Thomas says that it is a journey. She says, “I knew that this second year would be all about the business, the marketing, and the sales.”

Tracy Rinaldo says the hardest part of running a design business is staying focused. As creatives, there’s so much we want to do, but to build a profitable business, it’s crucial to focus on the right products and activities.

How to Develop A Product, a Brand, and a Style From Live Presentation with Carina Gardner

Learn how to develop a product, brand, and style from a live presentation from Carina Gardner. At the Design Suite Maker Conference, I gave a live keynote on how to develop a product, aimed at helping budding designers find their style and build a brand.

I introduced two frameworks to guide attendees through the process. The first was the Make Art That Sells model from the book. I focused on how using medium, theme, and product can help you stand out in the marketplace.

The second was the Good, Better, Best framework from my book Design Profit Prosper. The idea is that with so many products available, yours must excel in both usability and beauty. This approach not only helps you build a recognisable brand but also ensures your products sell—making your business truly viable.

I felt like this was an important enough topic that I would make it available for YOU to watch as well. You can watch the entire keynote lecture here

Have You Ever Joined A Live Design Bootcamp?

Maybe one of the coolest things I get to do are live Design Bootcamps Teaching live  means that I get to interact with new bootcampers and answer their questions about design business.

It’s not surprising that many of the same questions pop up time and time again at a bootcamp like…

“Is there really room for ME in this industry?”

“Do I have to know how to draw to become a designer?”

“How do you make money as a designer?”

And I love answering these! Design Bootcamp is really about understanding strategies that successful designers are using and which ones are not.

This five day bootcamp occurs for one hour a day at 10am MT/12pm ET. Plus there are two bonus videos to help you get started on designing in Illustrator.

If you can’t come to the live class, a replay is available for two weeks so you can still watch.

Oh, and I also talk about Design Suite, which is my

premier program as well as the University of Arts & Design. I usually talk about these on Day 3 only to those who would like to learn more (it is not part of our workshop series).

If you want to join, you can get your ticket at www.designsuitecourses.com/designbootcamp.

Can’t wait to see you there!

Why You Can’t Stop Designing as You Approach the Holiday Season

As the summer fades and the holiday season approaches, many designers feel the urge to slow down or even stop designing. It is a common occurrence.  The bustling summer months often lead to a well-deserved break. However, the holiday season should not be a time for designers to pause. In fact, it’s a critical period to keep the creative juices flowing. Here’s why:

The Holiday Sales Boom

Everyone knows the holiday season is the time designers see the biggest sales of their year. It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that because sales are booming, you can relax. However, this is actually the best time to stock your shops with new, appealing designs. Customers flocking to your store for holiday gifts will likely return throughout the year if they see versatile designs suitable for other occasions.

Year-Round Appeal

When customers visit your shop during the holiday season, they are not only looking for Christmas or Hanukkah gifts. They’re also scouting for items they can use later in the year. Crafters are looking for designs for birthdays, Mother’s Day, back-to-school events, or any other special occasion. By offering a diverse range of products, you ensure a steady stream of customers throughout the year, not just during the holidays.

Leveraging Holiday Creativity

Let’s be honest – if you’re a designer, you’re probably already in full holiday mode by November. I know I am. Designing Christmas cards, creating a whimsical Christmas Village, constructing a Gingerbread House, crafting Christmas ornaments, and planning all sorts of holiday-themed projects become a significant part of what you do this time of year. So why not capitalize on this festive creativity?

Stock Your Shops

All the holiday-themed items you’re designing can and should be added to your shops. By continually updating your shop with fresh designs, you keep your inventory dynamic and engaging, encouraging repeat visits and purchases.

Preparing for the Post-Holiday Season

The designs you create during the holiday season don’t just have to be for the holidays. Think ahead and create items that can be marketed for other events and holidays throughout the year. This ensures that when the holiday rush is over, you’re not left scrambling to come up with new products. Your shop remains stocked with relevant, appealing designs that keep customers coming back.

While it might be tempting to slow down as the holiday season approaches, maintaining your design momentum can lead to significant benefits. By continuing to create and stock your shop with versatile designs, you ensure a steady stream of customers throughout the year. Embrace the festive spirit and leverage your holiday creativity. While you are at it, don’t forget to enjoy yourself and make lots of fun gifts to give and to put into your shop.

Here are a few fun holiday podcasts from Make and Design that will get your creative juices flowing.

What Does Carina Think About Ai and Design?

As designers, I believe it is essential to recognize the value and limitations of AI in our field. While AI is a powerful tool, it will never fully replace the nuanced work of an actual designer. I can still remember when computers revolutionized design. When they first emerged, they were met with skepticism and resistance. Many who specialized in traditional methods like lithography or screen printing found themselves out of work because they refused to adapt. The ultimate danger for designers today is ignoring AI technology out of fear, ego, or pride. Instead, we should embrace it, learn about it, and integrate it into our workflow because the industry is moving in that direction. Just as computers did not render designers obsolete, I believe that AI won’t either. It will simply be the next evolution in our toolkit.

Some good examples of how AI is currently being used are design tasks such as:

  • Mockups
  • Color correction
  • Straight art
  • Prompts
  • Getting started images
  • Logo design

Charts and graphsIt is important to remember that AI operates primarily with pixels. This presents limitations in creating scalable vector graphics, which are essential for logos and corporate images. AI cannot produce vector images, making designers indispensable for these tasks.
Designers will always be needed because AI cannot handle the entire design process. While AI can assist with the creative aspects, it cannot understand the purpose of a product, create layered SVG files, produce spot colors, or color-match artwork accurately. These tasks require a designer’s expertise, critical thinking, and practical application skills.

Another thing to consider is that AI-generated artwork often has a uniform look, whereas designers can create original content, filter biases, and understand the nuances of language, colors, and elements. These are things AI cannot do.

Yes, I do believe that some design jobs may be lost to AI. But I also believe that many more will be created. As more people use AI for design, they will need professionals to clean up, vectorize, and make their designs usable. The types of design jobs at risk are those involving quick turnarounds and inexpensive designs like logos, as well as pixel-based design programs like Procreate.

My advice to designers today is to avoid markets without proven profitability and focus on areas where they can pivot quickly to other opportunities. Be wise about your choices and stay adaptable. These things will help ensure a successful future in design.

There’s no doubt about it…AI is a valuable tool for designers, but it is not a replacement. Embrace it, learn from it, and use it to enhance your work. By being smart and critical thinkers, designers can navigate the evolving industry and continue to provide unique and indispensable value.

Designers! Don’t Put Your Foot on Break This Summer

For many designers, the summertime-sale-slump (try saying that 5 times fast) is REAL. After years of owning my own design businesses, I would brace myself in May for what was going to happen in June, July, and August.

Since designing was my full time job, I did not stop creating even when sales were low.

Why?

Because I knew what the other months of the year looked like. I knew that by slowing down my production of designs, I would be preceding a lot of sales that would happen later in the year.

Over the years, I would hear design friends complain about the summer sales. Low sales often lead to low motivation to create, which is why so many would pause their design work. This would often lead to crazy holiday months. This included rushing to fulfill product orders and creating new products at a maddening pace during the busiest times of the year.

Here are a few strategies I’ve developed over the years to make the most of the summer months and prepare for the busier seasons:

  1. Focus on Inventory Building: Use the summer slump to your advantage by building up your inventory. This ensures that when the high-demand months roll around, you have a robust selection of products ready to go. This not only saves you from the frantic rush of creating on the fly but also allows you to offer a wider variety of designs to your customers.
  2. Experiment and Innovate: Summer can be a great time to experiment with new designs and ideas. Since the pressure is lower, you can afford to take creative risks and innovate. This period can be an opportunity to refine your skills, try out new techniques, or even explore different niches that you wouldn’t have time for during busier months.
  3. Plan Ahead for Holiday and Event Designs: Use the downtime to plan and create products for upcoming seasons. This might include designing holiday and seasonal crafts or designs. It might also mean getting ahead on promotional graphics, planning social media content, or setting up email campaigns. Having these ready in advance can save you a lot of time and stress later on.
  4. Engage with Your Audience: Summer is a great time to engage more deeply with your audience. Host online workshops, run contests, or simply share behind-the-scenes glimpses of your creative process. Building a stronger connection with your customers can lead to increased loyalty and sales down the line.
  5. Evaluate and Improve Your Shop: Take this time to review your online shop. Update product descriptions, improve your photography, and make sure your website is user-friendly. Enhancing the overall shopping experience can have a significant impact on your sales when the busy season hits.
  6. Network and Collaborate: Reach out to other designers and businesses for potential collaborations. Working with others can bring fresh ideas and new audiences to your work. It’s also a great way to stay motivated and inspired during slower times.

By staying productive and proactive during the summer months, you set yourself up for success when the busy season arrives. Remember, consistency is key in the design business. Keeping your momentum going, even when sales are slow, can lead to significant payoffs later in the year. So, embrace the summer slump as a time for growth and preparation, and you’ll be ready to shine when the sales start rolling in again.

What’s In And What’s Out in Design

2024 came in with a bang and the design world has been a buzz. Now that we are 4 months into the year, here are some of the things we are seeing.

Peach Fuzz came in strong as Pantone’s 2024 color of the year while Etsy says that romance is taking center stage. We are seeing both of these things coming to fruition within only a few months of the year.

So what do we see trending hard? Feminine and girly are certainly at the forefront, but you will also see hardworking textures like denim come to center stage.

As always, do not be afraid of niches with loyal followings. We continue to see heightened response to designers and artists who know who they sell to. This includes the science nerd all the way to the charmed jewelry enthusiasts.

For those that want to battle AI’s image sameness we are seeing in the market, simply step out with your own style. We see homegrown, personally-made, and artist-aware becoming an even more valuable aspect of customers who want to purchase from real designers and artists.

As always no matter what the trend, we love designers who are true to themselves. That authenticity always shines through especially as they create smart, consistent business practices.

Why Are All of Design Suite Courses Now 15 Weeks Long?

During 2024 and 2025, one of Dr. Carina Gardner’s main goals has been to upgrade all of the coursework to a new academic standard. Carina states, “Right now we are seeing anyone with a tiny bit of technical skill offer a course. Because of this, there is no technical or academic standard that helps customers and students understand how much time and effort those courses will take.”

By changing all the curriculum in Design Suite to 8 week (quarter long) and 15 week (semester long) course work, it will help customers understand the extent of exactly what they are purchasing so that they can continue their professional development.

Many of the courses in Design Suite have lifetime access (of the site designsuitecourses.com) and these are continually upgraded. All 17 courses will be getting a reboot over the next two years at no cost to students.

“Our main goal,” states Dr. Carina Gardner, “Is to help expectations. Often do-it-yourself designers believe they should start making money in their new business in 3 months. This is an unrealistic expectation especially for many who have not had any formal design or business training.”

For the last three years, Dr. Carina Gardner’s Design Suite program has been helping new and struggling designers learn how to set up a business, understand what is happening in the marketplace, and put in structures for long term success. She emphasizes that it takes a lot of time and education to build a successful business but it is completely doable with the right mentorship.

Turning Creativity into Cash: Simone Bowles’ Profitable Journey with Design Suite

Simone Bowles, a two-year Design Suite member, discusses with Carina Gardner about the incredible success and money she has made after joining the program in this podcast. She begins by talking about how she chose a career that was not quite creative enough for her.

Simone states, “I read this book by Julia Donaldson called the Artist’s Way, and she said that a lot of people who were creative go into careers that are almost creative.” In a world brimming with opportunities, the journey of fulfilling one’s creative and entrepreneurial aspirations can often feel like a daunting task. Simone took a leap of faith that many are afraid to do, leaving her past career and pursuing her creative dreams by joining the Design Suite program, tailored for aspiring designers who want to make money with their creations.

“In terms of actual graphic design, I knew nothing,” Simone explains, “I came from a world that was so different. [I felt like] the imposter, like ‘how am I going to do this?’ …But then I [remembered] that they chose me for a reason… It grew me in so many ways… and if you were to ask me the year before ‘would I do freelance graphic design’, it would be a definite no… I thought it would be so hard.”

Simone went into the program with hardly any experience of creative design. However, as the process went on for her, passion was ignited, breathing life into her artistic visions. She quickly found a love for what she was doing. She explained that, “This is for me, I want all of the things,” as the program went on for her. After the first year of the program, there was so much that Simone learned. She felt the strong desire to continue for another year, allowing her to make lots of money from this. “Honestly I feel like I can call myself a designer now… once you do, the jobs come!” Opportunity was met with hard work, and Simone’s work took off.

When talking about her success, Simone stated, “Just be open to the path that [comes] to you. If you try to go down one road you get so much resistance… I made the money within my second year [of the program]… I made enough to pay for the kids’ school tuition which isn’t cheap… and that was in my second year!”

After the decision was made to pursue this dream of Simone’s, she was rewarded. Design Suite is the catalyst for inspiration to make money, and Simone did just that in her second year of the journey. She was extremely grateful and emotional over the success she has reaped in the podcast when explaining the money she made to pay for the tuition of her kids’ educations. You truly get what you pay for when you join the Design Suite courses, along with opportunity and fulfillment bursting at the seams.

Not only did Simone make a great amount of money, she also built incredible relationships with those in the Design Suite community, which is huge. Simone goes on to say, “It’s key… I just know people I can go to who are now friends of mine… in the sewing world… in the patent world… in the papercraft world… that is gold.” She continues by saying, “There’s so many things [that make Design Suite good value]… It really is the community and the information… Design Suite has those supports.”

From all across the globe, there are members of the Design Suite program, and these members build one another up, offer advice, help, and friendship, taking things to a more meaningful level through this program. This brings that human connection that is missing in a lot of programs.

The opportunities are endless when becoming a member of Design Suite and embarking on the journey, allowing for personal and professional growth. The program serves as a catalyst for self-discovery, empowering individuals to leverage their strengths and carry out their niches in the creative landscape. Simone Bowles is an excellent example of this coming to reality.

To access Simone’s business and creations, you can follow her on Instagram: @_simonebowles_  or find her on Etsy: SBPARTYPRINTABLES.

The Top Three Things You Need to Start Your Surface Pattern Design Business

Many people dream of creating a surface pattern design business or businesses in the craft field like sublimation, Cricut or Silhouette files, Glowforge files, or printables. As my own design business has flourished over the last 14 years, I have turned part of my focus to helping other designers get started in this field.

Today I want to focus on surface pattern design since this was one of my early goals when I was a new designer.

Many of the things that I’m going to cover today are also in my New Designer Checklist. You can get this free download by going to my Instagram and following me at @carinagardner. If you comment “CHECKLIST” on the most recent post, I’ll send you a PDF link in your DMs.

This checklist contains six practical points to help you get started. Today I’m going to talk to you about three of those.

The Top Three Things You Need to Start Your Surface Pattern Design Business

Tools

1. Tools are everything. In Stephen Covey’s “Seven Habits of Highly Effective People” he says to “sharpen your saw.” Abraham Lincoln said, “If I only had an hour to chop down a tree, I would spend the first 45 minutes sharpening my axe.”  Both Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Covey understand that tools save you time and money. A sharpened saw or axe will make the work go quicker.

I’ve been known to tell people to hold off on joining my Design Suite program until they have purchased the right tools.

One example of something I do not skimp on is computer memory. I will pay extra to put more memory into my laptop because I know it will save me hundreds of hours of time because the computer will go faster.

Software

2. I’m a huge advocate of the Adobe software. I have been using the software for over 20 years and it is the gold standard. While there are a lot of new programs out there, none will help you create your final production pieces. Do the hard work and learn Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop and it will serve you well as a professional designer.

Other tools like Procreate can be used in conjunction with the Adobe Software (many of our courses reference Procreate and many of our Design Suite members use it). However, we have to finalize all design work in Photoshop or Illustrator before sending it on to it’s final destination.

I get a lot of resistance to this because many people really emphasize that the other programs are so much cheaper. Have you heard the saying, “you get what you pay for”? This is certainly the case with design software.

A Plan

3. Finally, you need a plan for selling your designs. I talk about this in my Design Bootcamp because it is such a vital piece of making money as a designer. This was one lesson I personally learned.

I find that many people go into design with the mentality that they are just going to make what they like. Creating a plan for who you are designing for will make your design work stronger and help you build for the final production stages.

Do you know where to start now? Are you ready to learn more?

Check out an upcoming bootcamp, here: https://www.carinagardnercourses.com/designbootcamp

Keep designing!

Carina
