Design Around the World: A Stunning Indian Wedding at Hayes Mansion

Today, I’m excited to share a unique “Design Around the World” experience at my youngest sister’s Indian wedding. This celebration took place at the historic Hayes Mansion in San Jose, California. A Family Gathering at Hayes Mansion

Our journey began as we traveled to San Jose, California. Hayes Mansion, an incredible estate dating back to 1905, was the perfect setting for this memorable event. With its Mediterranean Revival architecture, intricate woodwork, and grand furnishings, the mansion brought a sense of elegance to every corner.

As we explored, the mansion’s unique details stood out. From exquisite wallpapers to the antique wood finishes, each space sparked design inspiration. The vibrant colors and classic architecture set the stage for the wedding, blending historic beauty with the lively energy of the celebration.

The Sangeet: A Night of Colors, Music, and Dance

The wedding festivities began with the Sangeet, held on Saturday night. We had just arrived in town, rushing to wrap ourselves in sarees—a first for some of us! My sister Caitlin, a fashion and graphic designer, designed the event’s graphics, including posters, signage, and henna stations. Her unique style added a personal, artistic touch to every element.

The energy at the Sangeet was unforgettable. Guests arrived from across the country, and the night was filled with music, dancing, and laughter. Family and friends enjoyed the henna, delicious food, and beautifully crafted decorations. Every detail was vibrant, reflecting the joy and excitement of the evening.

The Wedding Ceremony: Tradition and Celebration

Sunday brought the main wedding ceremony. We started early to prepare, with Caitlin looking stunning in an outfit accented by fresh flowers woven into her hair. The ceremony took place outdoors under a bright California sun, casting a glow over everyone’s colorful attire. Surrounded by ornate decor and blooming flowers, the setting was picture-perfect.

The ceremony was filled with tradition and family involvement. A live saxophone and drum accompanied the event, filling the air with music. My mom, sisters, and I had the honor of participating in several ceremonies, which felt both beautiful and meaningful. Each moment celebrated not only Caitlin and her husband but also the joining of two families and two cultures.

Discover Kauai’s Unique Design and Island Charm

Exploring Kauai’s Unique Island Design and Vibe

When my family and I arrived in Kauai, the “Garden Isle,” we were ready for an adventure filled with design inspiration and natural beauty. Known for its lush rainforests, serene beaches, and towering cliffs, Kauai is unlike anywhere else. The island has a unique vibe—quieter than Maui or Oahu—making it the perfect escape. Each corner of Kauai seemed to offer Kauai design inspiration, blending laid-back design and functional beauty that reflects the island’s heart and personality.

Our journey started right at the airport, where a colorful sign with a bold serif font for “Kauai” greeted us. The choice of cursive for the rest of the text and the warm colors instantly set a welcoming, island feel. These subtle design touches hinted at the artistry and Kauai design inspiration we would see across the island.

Relaxing at the Sheraton Kauai Coconut Hotel

For our stay, we chose the Sheraton Kauai Coconut Hotel, which offered all we needed for both relaxation and fun. With its easy beach access, inviting pools, and delightful dining spots, it was ideal. Traveling in September meant fewer tourists, making our beach days quiet and peaceful. The hotel even had torches and bonfires in the evenings, creating a cozy, welcoming atmosphere. In every detail, the hotel’s design seemed perfectly in tune with Kauai design inspiration, blending effortlessly with the island’s natural beauty.

Taking in Kauai’s Beach and Wildlife Design

One of our favorite spots was Poipu Beach, known for its family-friendly atmosphere and local wildlife. We were lucky enough to see two turtles resting on the sand and even a monk seal. To protect these beautiful creatures, Kauai’s wildlife team placed signs around them, designed with bright yellow backgrounds and seal silhouettes that instantly communicated caution. These signs were both functional and visually appealing, keeping visitors informed and respectful, and adding another layer of Kauai design inspiration.

Even the beach safety signs had a unique touch, with bold fonts and weathered shapes giving them character. The “Warning” sign, in particular, stood out with a distinct wave silhouette, making it easy to spot and understand. Every detail seemed to be considered, reflecting the island’s balance of beauty and safety, and adding to the Kauai design inspiration that guided the way.

Exploring Kauai’s Local Shops and Eclectic Signage

Kauai’s shops and markets added more charm to our trip. One memorable spot was a small, family-owned fruit stand, decked out with handmade signs and a storefront shaped like a pineapple. Despite the mismatched “Coconut Corner” signs, the overall effect was welcoming and playful. The hand-painted letters added a touch of vintage flair, while the thick, puffy letters made everything feel inviting and added to our Kauai design inspiration.

We also spotted creative designs at various eateries, like the playful logos at Island Taco and Monico’s restaurant. Each sign seemed to reflect the unique flavor of Kauai’s local businesses, from the hand-drawn details to vibrant color choices that blended beautifully with the tropical surroundings, offering fresh Kauai design inspiration in every detail.

The Majestic Views of Waimea Canyon

Our Kauai adventure would not have been complete without a visit to Waimea Canyon. Known as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” this awe-inspiring sight offered breathtaking views of red and green layers of volcanic rock. Even on a rainy day, the views were unforgettable. Though we opted to admire the scenery from lookouts rather than hike, the canyon’s natural design provided endless Kauai design inspiration. Every twist and turn of the landscape seemed to tell a story of Kauai’s powerful and peaceful beauty.

Reflecting on Kauai’s Functional, Island-Infused Design

Throughout our trip, I was impressed by how Kauai design inspiration seamlessly fit the island lifestyle. At our resort, we received keycard bracelets, making it easy to enjoy the beach without worrying about losing room keys. The simplicity of these small design details made our experience feel easy and worry-free. Even at the beach, the minimalist pool chairs and uncluttered surroundings highlighted Kauai’s emphasis on simple, functional beauty.

Food Truck on Kauai

This trip showed me that Kauai’s charm is about so much more than its scenery. The island’s thoughtful design details, from handcrafted signs to seamless functionality, created an atmosphere where nature and creativity coexisted beautifully, inspiring Kauai design inspiration for travelers, artists, and nature lovers alike.

Design Around the World | Markets in Amsterdam

Join Carina in her latest Design Around the World video Exploring Amsterdam’s Unique Markets: A Journey Through Flea Markets, Flower Markets, and Art Festivals

Amsterdam is a city renowned for its picturesque canals, stunning architecture, and vibrant cultural scene. In Carina’s latest Design Around the World video, she took a delightful walk through some of the city’s most iconic markets, discovering hidden gems and unique finds along the way. Here’s a quick look at her adventure, highlighting the flea market at Waterlooplein, the famous Bloemenmarkt flower market, and the art and design market at Westergas.

Waterlooplein Flea Market

Her journey began with a leisurely walk to the Waterlooplein flea market, one of Amsterdam’s oldest and most historic markets. Established in 1885, this market has evolved from its origins as a Jewish market into a bustling multicultural hub. Situated near significant landmarks such as the Rembrandt House Museum and the Stopera (city hall and opera house), the market boasts around 300 stalls offering a diverse range of goods. From vintage clothing and antiques to books, jewelry, records, and quirky collectibles, Waterlooplein is a treasure trove for bargain hunters and collectors. Whether you’re seeking one-of-a-kind pieces or simply looking for a fun day out, this market has something for everyone. During her visit, Carina picked up a charming watch for her daughter and an old tin with a motif that inspired her.

*Tip: Bring a jacket, as the wind can be chilly.

Bloemenmarkt: The Flower Market

Next, Carina went to the enchanting Bloemenmarkt, also known as the flower market. Dating back to 1862, this market is renowned for its vast selection of tulips, including bulbs, fresh flowers, and tulip-related souvenirs. The vibrant and colorful stalls offer a delightful shopping experience for flower enthusiasts and tourists alike. Beyond tulips, the market features a variety of other flowers and plants, catering to all tastes and seasons. Visitors can purchase seeds, vases, and other memorabilia, making it a fragrant and visually stunning spot to explore. This market quickly became one of Carina’s favorite places in Amsterdam due to its lively atmosphere and beautiful displays.

*Tip: Ensure tulip bulbs are certified for export to avoid customs issues.

Westergas Market

Carina’s final stop was the Westergas market, an art, design, and fashion market located in a lovely park. Although she arrived too early to see all the vendors; the market is known for its housewares, ceramics, fashion, vintage items, jewelry, accessories, illustrations, and affordable art. The market also features lovely organic food and drinks at the indoor and outdoor cafes, creative workshops, and live music.

Amsterdam’s markets are a delightful blend of history, culture, and vibrant local life. Whether you’re a collector, a design lover, or just looking for a fun day out, these markets have something for everyone. Check out the full video on Carina’s channel for more inspiration and details!

First Day in Albuquerque

So, I know that I said I woudl not be writing on my blog, but as it turns out we were in Albuquerque all day today (and spending the night in town) and we’ll be in Santa Fe all day tomorrow. So here I am, with a friendly update on life.

Today, after my very short plane ride and talking to a gentleman who had SERIOUS New Mexico pirde (Texas pride—yes, California pride—yes, but New Mexico—This was new!), I met up with my little group at convention. Amy Flowers is the coordinator of this event and we spent the day at the Albuquerque Museum of History and Art, shopping at a stamp store, and then a FABULOUS paper store (Will post photos of those soon), dinner at a cool little diner (can we say Greek Goddess Salad—Deep fried FETA cheese—yum!).
Here are some pics of the day (sorry there are not many):

The outside of the museum…yes, yes, I see your interested peaked, even rising.

What do you THINK of this sculpture, how do you FEEL when you look at it, what do you…(Okay, done pretending to be an art critic).

Josh, I took a photo of this one in honor of you.

This my still-life that I put together. I may become a painter after-all with such awesome skills. Or make a career of it…still-life-putter-together-er.

I really do in-fact love this one.

And that’s it. No giving away all my creative inventions as of yet! More to come…(don’t act so scared!)

I also got an email today from my friend Amy, who just started a new blog that is all about fun things to do with your kids. She has up A TON of things to do for october/halloweenish type stuff on the blog that I would totally recommend checking out. Here’s the link: http://amy-fun4kids.blogspot.com/

Los Cabos

Hi everyone! I know I haven’t written for a while because I was in Los Cabos this last week doing a convention for work. The resort we stayed at was BEAUTIFUL! I’d highly recommend it to anyone. It’s called the Westin Resort and Spa. Got lots of sun and “baby” pena coladas as they call them (non alcoholic). Josh went fishing on Tuesday (he was sea sick the entire time) and we went on a catamaran cruise with snorkeling (the coral reef wasn’t so great, but it was fun anyway) and I loved all the people at the convention! Here are some pics!

If you want to see cute videos of the girls, SuiKim has some on her blog (she watched them). SuiKim and Steven’s Blog
