Each live session is a chance to hang out, get inspired, and make something together. Whether you’re painting, gluing, or glittering alongside us—or just watching with your favorite drink in hand—I promise you’ll walk away with fresh ideas and a big creative spark.
First Up: Brenna Powell
We kicked things off with the amazing Brenna Powell, who joined me for a live laser-cut painting challenge. Yep, we crafted in real time, and Brenna shared all kinds of helpful tips for painting laser-cut designs. It was so much fun watching her creative process unfold—I’m still thinking about all the clever little details she added!
Next up is the fabulous Tiffani Hawkins, and we’ll be making something sweet together—a Happy Birthday Cupcake Shaker Topper! This cute project is perfect for cupcakes, but you can totally size it up for a cake topper too. We’ll be crafting it LIVE, chatting, and sharing tips as we go!
I’ll be going live all summer long with more amazing guests and projects, and I’d love for you to join us. Make sure you’re subscribed to my YouTube channel so you don’t miss any of the fun. Each live has a different guest and project, so there’s always something new to try

Hosting a virtual creative conference might sound like a series of Zoom links and cute graphics, but behind the scenes? It’s a whirlwind of planning, creativity, chaos, and connection—and I wouldn’t have it any other way. If you are wondering What It’s Like Behind the Scenes of a Virtual Creative Conference, this post is for you!
From the very beginning, these Design Suite events are built with one goal in mind: to pour inspiration, education, and encouragement into the creative community. But what does it really look like before the curtain rises and the cameras roll?
Let me take you behind the scenes…
The Prep: A Calendar Full of Color (and Deadlines!)
Weeks before a single class goes live, our team is deep in Google Docs, email threads, presentation recordings, design tweaks, and event timelines. Coordinating 30+ speakers and their freebies is no small feat! There are deadlines… and then there are designer deadlines (which sometimes involve bursts of brilliance at midnight). And yes, I may or may not have hit record three times on one presentation because the lighting was just not it.
The Magic: Real People, Real Community
One of my absolute favorite parts? Seeing creatives from around the world show up for each other. In our Event Community and live chats, you can feel the joy. Attendees share their work, ask questions, and cheer each other on. It’s like one giant creative hug.
And the speakers? Each one brings their A-game. We’ve had everything from how-tos on acrylic and UV resin to heartfelt sessions on pursuing art after 40. There’s something so powerful about women (and a few brave men!) showing up to teach what they’ve learned.
The Chaos: Wi-Fi Woes & Tech Gremlins
Of course, not everything goes perfectly. We’ve had presenters lose power mid-recording, links that didn’t work, and audio go mysteriously silent. (Don’t worry—we always figure it out.)
But here’s the thing: the imperfections are part of the charm. It’s real. It’s human. And it reminds us that progress beats perfection every single time
The Win: Watching YOU Light Up
At the end of every event, when the comments roll in and we see attendees launching their Etsy shops, selling their first products, or finally calling themselves “designers,” it’s all worth it. These events are more than conferences—they’re catalysts for dreams in motion.
Whether you’ve joined us for a past Design Suite event or you’re thinking about diving in next time, I hope you know this: you belong here. You don’t have to be “ready.” You just have to show up with your spark.
We’ll be waiting for you—with open arms and probably a mug of hot cocoa in hand. Want to catch up on past virtual conferences or grab an All Access Pass? Check out our Design Events page here!
If you’ve ever wondered What It’s Like Behind the Scenes of a Virtual Creative Conference, we hope this gave you a fun peek into the magic, mayhem, and meaningful moments that make it all worth it. A Night to Remember: Sleeping Under the Sea at the Georgia Aquarium
If you ever get the chance to sleep next to a beluga whale, do it. My daughter Felicity and I had the most unforgettable overnight experience at the Georgia Aquarium, and we’re still smiling about it! In this Design Around the World – Georgia Aquarium edition, I took my daughter Felicity on a truly one-of-a-kind adventure.
Felicity is absolutely obsessed with whale sharks (can you blame her?), so taking her to the only aquarium in the U.S. that houses these gentle giants was a dream come true. The Georgia Aquarium’s Ocean Voyager gallery is not only one of the largest single aquatic exhibits in the world. It was built specifically to house whale sharks. Talk about impressive!
Sleep Under the Sea: The Ultimate Aquarium Sleepover
We signed up for the Sleep Under the Sea overnight experience, which let us explore the aquarium after hours and even sleep right next to the exhibits. Our sleeping spot? The second level right in front of the beluga whales. Yes, we actually fell asleep to the sound of them clicking and talking to each other—it was magical.
Before we rolled out our sleeping bags, we got a few private behind-the-scenes tours, starting in the Ocean Voyager section. We not only saw the whale sharks up close (amazing!), but also learned all kinds of fun facts during interactive activities and Q&A sessions with the staff.
One of the most jaw-dropping things we learned: the whale sharks were flown from Taiwanto Alaska to Georgia on a UPS 747 jet, in a 30-hour journey. And get this—UPS did it for free. How cool and generous is that?
Design Lovers, Take Note
As a designer, I couldn’t help but geek out over the aquarium’s beautiful logos, fonts, and exhibit designs. Every space had its own visual identity, from the bold graphics of the shark exhibit to the playful elements in the children’s areas. It was like a visual feast, and the attention to detail in how the design tied into the experience was top-notch.
The central atrium made it easy to see all the exciting areas waiting to be explored—each one crafted with a different audience and vibe in mind. It was inspiring to see how smart design can enhance storytelling and learning.
Peaceful Giants and Quiet Moments
The next morning, before the crowds came in, we were lucky enough to get quiet time in front of the whale sharks. Just us and the fish, peacefully gliding by. It was such a calming and awe-inspiring moment—a rare chance to just watch and wonder.
Watch the Video
We captured some of our favorite moments and will be sharing them soon. You’ll want to see Felicity’s face the first time she saw the whale sharks—it’s priceless.Watch the full YouTube video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TrF3JrEv6I
If you’ve ever considered visiting the Georgia Aquarium, especially for one of their sleepovers, take this as your sign. It’s educational, inspiring, and a truly one-of-a-kind memory-maker. We’ll be talking about this night for years to come.
Our Master the Machine virtual event wrapped up on May 7–8, 2025, and we are still buzzing with excitement! This one-of-a-kind experience brought together users of Silhouette, Cricut, and Siser machines for a creative two-day journey filled with learning, crafting, and connection.
Master the Machine was our first event ever to unite all three major die-cutting machines—Silhouette, Cricut, and Siser—in one place. Whether you’re a beginner just getting started or a seasoned maker ready to take your skills up a notch, there was something for everyone.
Attendees got:
18 expert-led classes
13 exclusive project files + 100 exclusive designs created by Carina and her team
Live Q&A sessions with presenters
Step-by-step tutorials on vinyl, paper crafts, sketch files, and advanced features
And just when you thought it couldn’t get better… we added some amazing bonus live sessions!
Bonus Lives & Giveaways Galore
We surprised attendees with three bonus sessions that were packed with insight and inspiration:
✨ Michelle Price from 12×12 Cardstock Shop joined us to talk all things cardstock—her favorite brands, how to choose the right kind for your projects, and expert tips. She even gave away a $50 gift card to her shop!
✨ Patrick from Siser gave us a behind-the-scenes look at the Siser Juliet and Romeo machines, plus a deep dive into Leonardo software. And yes—someone went home with a brand new Siser Juliet!
✨ In our Silhouette Live, we covered the Cameo 5, the electrostatic mat, and all the goodness inside the Silhouette Design Store. One lucky winner even scored a Silhouette Portrait machine!
And There’s More to Come!
One of the best parts of this event? It doesn’t stop here. As machines and software continue to evolve, we’ll be adding more bonus Live sessions in the future! Your lifetime access means you’ll automatically get access to these updates and new trainings—keeping you up to date as your machine grows with you.
Didn’t Attend Live? You Can Still Join!
If you didn’t get a chance to attend the live sessions, it’s not too late. All classes and bonus content are available now with lifetime access, so you can work through everything at your own pace.
Whether you own a Cricut, Silhouette, or Siser machine—or are thinking about getting one—this event is your go-to resource for growing your skills, creating beautiful projects, and mastering your machine once and for all.
I always find design inspiration from travel, and April 2025 was no exception. With back-to-back trips to Austin for a CEO Mastermind and then Tucson for the DEAC Annual Conference, I soaked in design ideas, business insights, and sunshine—what more could a designer ask for?
In Austin, I spent time with five of my favorite CEOs. This incredible group includes everyone from the president of a bank to a gymnastics facility owner. Because their industries vary so widely—franchise, wedding venues, manufacturing, corporate speaking—the conversations are electric. We dove into marketing strategies, retirement goals, and even economic forecasts.
Without fail, being around other driven entrepreneurs always stretches my mind. It reminds me that building a business is not a one-size-fits-all journey. Especially as a designer, these moments of expansion help me see new possibilities for growth and creativity.
Austin Design Details That Stood Out
Design-wise, Austin did not disappoint. Even our Airbnb had a super cool “Austin” sign that begged for photos. The city bursts with creative energy, and it shows in the typography everywhere. I especially loved the restaurant Anthem. Their logo was everywhere—walls, matchbooks, you name it—and it was brilliant branding.
And then there was Holey Moley, a putt-putt place with some of the most eclectic design choices I’ve ever seen. Think scrabble letters, a giant shark head, and even a toilet integrated into the holes! It was quirky, colorful, and a treasure trove of design inspiration from travel moments.
Besides masterminding, we shopped, laughed, and shared meals. I left Austin buzzing with creative travel ideas and deep appreciation for the amazing women I get to learn from.
Tucson: Where Education and Inspiration Meet
Next, I flew straight to Tucson for the DEAC Annual Conference. This was my second time attending, and it did not disappoint. As the University of Arts & Design (www.uad.education) continues to expand, I’m constantly searching for ways to improve student experiences. At DEAC, I met passionate university leaders who clearly love what they do.
Breakfast Among the Desert Beauty at Tohono Chul
Before the conference began, I had breakfast at the Tohono Chul Garden Bistro—a serene spot rich in natural beauty and local culture. Tohono Chul, which means “desert corner” in the Tohono O’odham language, serves as a botanical garden, cultural museum, and artistic hub. With its native plant gardens, soothing water features, and desert-inspired sculptures, the space was overflowing with design inspiration from travel. It was the perfect way to kick off a week of learning.
Learning, Leadership, and Looking Ahead
Tucson in April? Absolute perfection. The weather made everything feel even more magical. At the conference, I connected with college presidents and staff, discussed national policies, and better understood how current government movements will impact our university. I felt deeply grateful to be part of these important conversations, learning how other schools serve their students and communities.
Both Austin and Tucson gave me design-focused travel insights that will stick with me long after the suitcases are unpacked. Whether it’s through vibrant branding in a putt-putt course or the thoughtful way a garden bistro merges culture and creativity, design inspiration from travel keeps showing up—and I plan to keep chasing it.

The Dishing the Tea series is here, and we’re kicking things off with a fun and heartwarming chat! In this first episode, I sat down with my daughter, Felicity, to answer questions about what it’s really like living with a designer, business owner, and mom. This new YouTube series is all about candid Q&A sessions with the people closest to me—friends, family, and colleagues—and what better way to begin than with my own daughter?
In this episode of the Dishing the Tea series, Felicity spills all the secrets about growing up in a creative household. From being a “guinea pig” for my latest projects to laughing at my over-the-top crafting moments, she gives you a fun peek behind the curtain.
Here are some questions I asked her:
What’s it like living with a super creative mom who’s always designing something?
What’s the weirdest or funniest thing you’ve caught your mom doing in the middle of a creative project?
Have you ever had to “test” any of her designs or projects?
What’s something your mom is REALLY good at—and something she only thinks she’s good at?
If your mom wasn’t a designer or university owner, what would she be doing instead?
Felicity didn’t hold back, and her answers had us both laughing (and maybe blushing a little).
Balancing Business and Motherhood—Or Trying To!
Of course, I had to answer a few fun (and revealing) questions myself. The Dishing the Tea series is all about being honest, so I shared my own struggles and funny mishaps while trying to juggle it all.
Here are a few things Felicity asked me:
How do you balance being a designer, business owner, and mom—or do you? 😆
Have you ever gotten so lost in your work that you forgot something important?
What’s one creative skill your daughter has that surprises you?
Do you try to teach her design, or do you let her find her own creative path?
If your daughter took over your business one day, what do you think she’d change first?
Fun, Laughter, and Craft Fails
Because no Dishing the Tea series episode would be complete without a little humor, we wrapped up with some lighthearted questions that had us both cracking up.
What’s the funniest or messiest craft fail you’ve had together?
If you had to swap roles for a day—mom becomes the daughter, and daughter becomes the designer/business owner—what would happen?
What’s one thing the other person always says that makes you laugh?
What’s the best thing about having each other in your lives?
It was such a joy to share this conversation with Felicity. These are the kinds of moments I cherish—laughing, reminiscing, and connecting over the crazy, wonderful life we share.

The Sweet Life of a Designer is all about creativity, collaboration, and exciting projects! Before the Design Business Conference at Ashton Gardens in Lehi, Utah (March 6-8, 2025), my amazing coaches gathered at my house to kick things off. We dove into a fun Direct to Film (DTF) project where we created custom tote bags for conference attendees. Alongside the bags, we crafted unique pins to celebrate the event and our incredible community.
Custom Tote Bags with DTF

If you’re a creative entrepreneur struggling to stand out, this is for you. In my latest YouTube video, Sweet Life of A Designer: Stop Trying to Fit In (link coming soon), I dive into why you need to stop trying to fit in and instead embrace what makes you unique. This message is crucial because, as creatives, we often feel pressure to conform. But here’s the truth—when you stop trying to fit in, you give yourself permission to become memorable, impactful, and successful.
Watch the entire video here:
Why We Feel Pressured to Fit In
To understand why so many of us struggle with this, I want to talk about a fascinating psychological study: the Asch Conformity Experiment. This famous study showed just how powerful the desire to fit in can be.
In the Asch experiment, participants were asked to identify which line matched another in length. Simple, right? But here’s the catch—participants were placed in a group with actors who deliberately gave the wrong answers. Despite knowing the right answer, 32% of participants conformed to the group’s wrong answer in most trials, and 75% conformed at least once! This experiment clearly shows that people will often go along with the crowd—even when they know it’s wrong—just to fit in.
As designers and creators, we do this all the time—following trends we don’t love, using fonts everyone else is using, or designing products that blend in instead of stand out. But what if you stop trying to fit in and start leaning into what makes you you?
Why Standing Out Matters for Creative Entrepreneurs
As women who own creative or maker businesses, standing out is essential. So many people are out there trying to do what you do, but only you bring your unique style, voice, and story to the table. If you feel like you’re blending in, here are five ways you can start standing out today:
1. Own Your Signature Style
First, create a visual identity that screams you. Whether it’s a color palette, design aesthetic, or packaging, aim for something instantly recognizable. ✨ Example: A jewelry designer who only uses upcycled metals with hand-stamped messages will always stand out in a crowded market.
2. Tell Your Story Authentically
Next, share your why. People connect with stories, not just products. Talk about your journey and what makes you passionate about what you do. ✨ Example: A ceramic artist who creates pottery inspired by overcoming personal challenges will attract customers who resonate with that deeper meaning.
3. Niche Down to Stand Out
Also, specialize instead of trying to serve everyone. Find your niche—where your passion meets market demand. ✨ Example: A fabric designer who focuses exclusively on modern quilt patterns with bold, Scandinavian style will quickly become a go-to in that niche.
4. Innovate with Products & Experiences
Then, offer something no one else does—whether it’s a product, experience, or way of interacting with customers. ✨ Example: A printmaker who lets customers “Build Your Own Art Print” by mixing patterns and colors creates a one-of-a-kind shopping experience.
5. Show Up with Confidence & Personality
Finally, be unapologetically you. Show your personality in everything—from your social media captions to your emails. ✨ Example: A creative business coach who uses humor and “tough love” advice will connect deeply with her audience because she’s real and relatable.
The Cost of Fitting In
The Asch Conformity Experiment shows us what happens when we follow the crowd—we lose our voice. When you stop trying to fit in, you give yourself the freedom to become a brand that people notice, remember, and trust. Whether it’s in how you design, market, or talk about your business, standing out is how you thrive.
So, if you’ve been struggling with feeling invisible in a crowded market, watch my full breakdown on this topic in the YouTube video (link coming soon), and start thinking today about how you can lean into what makes you different.
Because fitting in is overrated—standing out builds brands that last.
If you love analyzing design as much as I do, this Amsterdam design review is for you! One of the best ways to understand what makes a design great—or not so great—is to study the design around us. That’s exactly what I did on my recent trip to Amsterdam, and I share all of it in my newest YouTube video, Sweet Life of A Designer Amsterdam Design Review. You can watch it here: https://youtu.be/k6kw10PTTeA.
Throughout my Amsterdam design review, I dive into everything from hotel interiors to typography on city streets. If you’re a designer, creative, or just someone who loves beautiful spaces, this video is a must-watch.
The Stunning Design of Hotel Nobleman
First, I review the incredible design at Hotel Nobleman, where I stayed during my trip. I absolutely loved the dark, moody walls that created an elegant yet cozy atmosphere. The light fixtures throughout the hotel added so much character — each one was unique and perfectly placed.
Even my hotel door became a subject of analysis! It featured a gorgeous metal ornamentation with beautiful typography that blended classic design with modern touches. As part of my Amsterdam design review, I couldn’t help but stop to appreciate how well the hotel combined intricate details with a modern vibe.
Unique Design Elements That Stood Out
As I explored more of the hotel, I spotted light fixtures shaped like guns — something you don’t see every day! They brought an unexpected edge to the elegant surroundings. In addition, the copper tub in my room was a stunning focal point. Of course, I also analyzed the artwork throughout the hotel, which ranged from bold to minimal but always interesting.
Restaurant Design that Inspired
Another highlight from my Amsterdam design review was a visit to Nieuw Amsterdam, a restaurant I enjoyed with my friends Nicki and Natali. The space had an Art Nouveau feel, with rich green walls, hanging lamps, and vertical artwork that created a sense of height and movement in the space. Every detail felt intentional, and the whole environment made for an amazing dining experience.
Typography All Over the City
I couldn’t do an Amsterdam design review without talking about typography! Walking around the city, I was constantly inspired by the fonts used on signage and buildings. Most of the city embraced Sans Serif fonts, giving everything a modern and clean look. But every now and then, I found Serif fonts and even script fonts, which added flair and elegance.
Final Thoughts on Amsterdam Design
Overall, Amsterdam offered a modern design experience filled with thoughtful details, amazing typography, and creative interior spaces. As a designer, I couldn’t get enough of it! If you’re looking for inspiration or just want to enjoy some great design eye candy, you can see all my favorite finds in the full video here: https://youtu.be/k6kw10PTTeA.
My sweet life of a designer travel took me to Las Vegas. There I attended Funnel Hacking Live. I spent the week surrounded by brilliant minds, including my CEO besties Nicki and Natali. Whenever I attend events like this, I’m reminded of how much marketing strategies evolve. I’m also reminded of how much inspiration comes from being in the room with other entrepreneurs.
Learning from the Best
First of all, one thing I love about conferences like Funnel Hacking Live is hearing marketing wisdom from speakers. Yes, some things are great reminders, but there are always fresh ideas that spark new possibilities. I love learning how others create impact in their businesses. Discovering new ways to engage with audiences is something I love. I always walk away with actionable steps to improve my own creative business.
Secondly, the sweet life of a designer travel to Las Vegas wouldn’t be complete without me geeking out over the design side of things! I was fascinated by all the graphics and visuals used throughout the conference. I even go over some of my favorite design elements in the video recap you can watch here: https://youtu.be/tUkSUWUk4P0.
I also talk about ClickFunnels new rebrand. This includes their new simplified logo, which caught my attention. It was a great reminder that sometimes simplifying design can have a bigger impact.

Sweet life of a designer barn is the story of my life right now. Trust me, it’s not always as glamorous as it sounds! After a long day of meetings and caring for a sick kid, I finally managed to make dinner. I also filmed a quick update to share with all of you. You can catch the full barn tour and life update on YouTube here: https://youtu.be/kjAeHq2iIyc.
What’s New in the Barn?
First of all, the sweet life of a designer barn includes a lot of construction dust these days! Right now, my house is completely filled with supplies waiting for their forever home in the barn. This includes a stove, refrigerator, microwave, and even a toilet. It’s a bit like living in a storage unit!
Secondly, I’m excited to share that vinyl paneling is officially up! This not only looks great but also helps soundproof the barn so I can work and create in peace. Plus, all the piping has been installed in the bathroom, so we are making progress — even if slower than I hoped.
Additionally, the lights are now installed, giving the barn a much more finished feel when you walk through. Some areas of the ceiling also have drywall completed — both on the bottom level and the attic ceiling. Still, there’s plenty of drywall left to hang, so that’s next on our list.
Beautiful View & What’s Left to Do
Also, one of my favorite parts of the barn is the attic window, which has an amazing view of the mountains. Every time I look out, I get a burst of creative inspiration — it’s such a peaceful spot.
However, even though we had hoped to have the barn completed by March 1, 2025, there are still some key pieces left unfinished. The bathroom isn’t done, and we are waiting on electrical work, flooring, and baseboards to be installed.
Real Talk: The Sweet Life of a Designer Barn
The sweet life of a designer barn comes with delays and challenges. However, I’m still so grateful for how far we’ve come. Soon, this barn will be a creative haven — but for now, it’s a good reminder that every big dream takes time (and a lot of patience).
If you want to see all these updates and walk through the barn with me, watch the full YouTube video here: https://youtu.be/kjAeHq2iIyc. I’d love for you to join me on this journey. Come see the process behind the scenes.
Thanks for following along, and stay tuned for the next update!
Create Art with a Swimsuit Stencil: Step-by-Step Guide
Welcome, fellow art enthusiasts! Today, I’m excited to show you how to create art with a swimsuit stencil in a fun and unique painting project. By using a swimsuit stencil as the base for my artwork, I traced multiple swimsuits onto a large watercolor canvas, bringing them to life with vibrant colors and patterns. Let’s dive into the process!
Watch the entire video here:
Step 1: Gather Your Materials
Before we start, make sure you have everything you need to create art with a swimsuit stencil:
A large watercolor paper or canvas
A swimsuit stencil (you can create your own or find one online)
Gouache paint for that lovely opaque finish
Brushes in various sizes
A pencil for tracing
Water and a palette for mixing colors
Step 2: Create Your Stencil
If you haven’t created a swimsuit stencil yet, it’s easy to make one. Simply print out a swimsuit shape, cut it out, and you’re ready to go! This step helps keep your designs consistent while allowing your creativity to shine.
Step 3: Trace the Swimsuits
Using the stencil, trace multiple swimsuit shapes onto your watercolor paper. Don’t worry about making them identical; instead, feel free to vary the sizes and angles a bit to keep it interesting. The goal is to create a playful composition that captures the essence of summer!
Step 4: Choose Your Colors and Patterns
Now comes the fun part! Decide on a color palette that resonates with you. Since I aimed for a retro feel, I chose bright and bold colors. Paint different patterns in each swimsuit, allowing your imagination to run wild. This is where you can truly express your style!
Step 5: Paint with Gouache
Using gouache paint, start filling in each swimsuit with your chosen colors and patterns. The opaque quality of gouache allows for vibrant and striking visuals. Take your time, enjoy the process, and remember that painting patterns is my favorite part!
Step 6: Add Finishing Touches
Once you’ve painted all the swimsuits, step back and take a look at your masterpiece. You might want to add some additional details or background elements to enhance the overall composition. Trust your instincts and make adjustments as needed.
Step 7: Share Your Artwork
Once you’re satisfied with your painting, share it with the world! Whether it’s on social media or a personal blog, showcasing your work can be incredibly rewarding.
In conclusion, there you have it—a step-by-step guide to create art with a swimsuit stencil! This project is not only enjoyable, but it also provides a wonderful opportunity for beginning artists to focus on painting and patterns. I hope you find inspiration in this technique and can’t wait to see what you create!
Happy painting!

In this Parowan Gap petroglyphs episode of “Design Around the World,” I take you to southern Utah, where my husband and I explored the ancient petroglyphs carved into the canyon walls. This unique site offers fascinating insights into the principles of design that still influence modern graphic design today.
Watch the entire youtube video here: (link)
The Parowan Gap: Ancient Design, Modern Lessons
Nestled in the rugged landscape of southern Utah lies the Parowan Gap, a geological wonder and a sacred site steeped in history. Famous for its V-shaped rock formation and the striking Parowan Gap petroglyphs carved into its sandstone walls, this site offers a glimpse into the creative minds of Native American cultures that lived here over a thousand years ago. These petroglyphs are more than just ancient art; they embody timeless principles of design and storytelling that continue to resonate in modern graphic design today.
A Natural and Cultural Wonder
The Parowan Gap is a narrow canyon, formed by an ancient river cutting through the Red Hills of southern Utah. This site’s unique features have drawn people for centuries, but the true allure lies in the petroglyphs adorning its walls. Created by the Fremont and Ancestral Puebloan peoples between 500 and 2,000 years ago, these carvings include symbols like spirals, geometric shapes, human figures, and celestial markers. Scholars believe these symbols may have served as a celestial calendar, tracking the sun, moon, and stars, further reinforcing the Parowan Gap petroglyphs as an ancient design masterpiece.
The Purpose Behind the Symbols
One of the most fascinating aspects of the Parowan Gap petroglyphs is their intentionality. Each carving was purposefully placed to mark an event or communicate a message. Researchers have identified carvings aligned with solar and lunar events, such as solstices and equinoxes. Some markings are designed so sunlight strikes them on significant days, showcasing the deep understanding of astronomy and the ability to translate knowledge into visual forms—core principles of design that still apply today.
The Parallels to Modern Graphic Design
At first glance, the ancient Parowan Gap petroglyphs might seem far removed from the digital designs of today. However, the design principles that guided these ancient artists are remarkably similar to those used by graphic designers today. Let’s explore some of these parallels:
1. Purposeful Design
Every petroglyph at Parowan Gap had a clear intent. Whether marking an astronomical event or telling a story, each carving was purposeful. Modern graphic design similarly operates on the principle that design must serve a purpose. Designers work to communicate a message, whether through logos, websites, or posters.
2. Simplicity and Clarity
The Parowan Gap petroglyphs are known for their simplicity. With basic shapes and lines, these ancient artists conveyed complex ideas. This mirrors the modern design principle of “less is more,” where simplicity and clarity ensure the message is easy to understand and impactful.
3. Use of Space
The creators of the Parowan Gap petroglyphs made deliberate use of the natural rock formations. By placing carvings in strategic locations, they maximized their visibility and impact. In modern design, this translates to the effective use of negative space, where every element of a design contributes to the overall composition.
4. Timeless Storytelling
Perhaps the most compelling parallel is the emphasis on storytelling. The petroglyphs at Parowan Gap tell the stories of their creators’ lives, beliefs, and environment. Similarly, modern graphic design often relies on visual storytelling to convey a brand’s message or narrative.
Lessons from the Past
The petroglyphs of the Parowan Gap remind us that design is not just a modern invention but a universal practice. These ancient carvings reveal how design can transcend time, illustrating that at its core, design is about connection: connecting people to ideas, each other, and the world around them. The lessons learned from these ancient Parowan Gap petroglyphs still guide modern designers in crafting meaningful and impactful work.
Visiting the Parowan Gap
The Parowan Gap is easily accessible from Cedar City, Utah, where visitors can explore interpretive signs that provide insights into the meanings behind the petroglyphs and the cultures that created them. Visiting this site is not just an opportunity to see ancient art—it’s a chance to connect with the origins of design itself.
Conclusion
The Parowan Gap petroglyphs stand as a bridge between the ancient and modern worlds. They show us that design is about more than just creating visually appealing works; it’s about communicating meaning in a way that resonates with others. Whether ancient artists carved into stone or modern designers work with digital tools, the goal remains the same: to tell a story, convey an idea, and leave a lasting impression. The Parowan Gap is a testament to the timeless nature of design and an enduring source of inspiration for designers everywhere.

I recently had the pleasure of revisiting an unforgettable off-grid sanctuary experience at Outpost X, and I’m excited to share our adventure in my latest “Design Around the World” video. A couple of years ago, I supported their Kickstarter campaign. We finally were able to book the experience and I made you a video to boot!
You can watch the entire youtube video I did on this experience here: (link).
Get ready for LOTS of wind because my video is full of windy moments :).
https://youtu.be/XEkv0bt02Cs
Location and Journey
Outpost X is nestled in the desert near Cedar City, Utah, roughly five hours from Salt Lake City. We embarked on this adventure in January, and while deserts are often associated with heat, the winter months were surprising chilly. Like 7 to 1 degrees chilly! In my YouTube video (link), I share the specific temperatures we encountered during our off-grid sanctuary experience.
About Outpost X
Outpost X, located in Beryl, Utah, is known as a “cinematic off-grid sanctuary.” Just 1.5 hours west of Zion National Park, this retreat offers guests a chance to disconnect from the demands of daily life. Spanning 100 acres of desert landscape, Outpost X provides both solitude in private accommodations and opportunities for social interaction in its immersive village. It’s the ultimate off-grid sanctuary experience.
Activities and Experiences
Outpost X offers a variety of activities to enhance the secluded sanctuary experience:
Sand Cruisers: Custom-built vehicles for touring the expansive property.
BYOB Cantina with Themed Mocktails: Enjoy a self-serve bar with immersive mocktail options.
X Spa: Hot tubs with waterfalls, saunas, clay spas, and cold plunges.
Gaming Room: Featuring a custom game table, board games, and a PS5.
Kaan Lounge: Ideal for sound bowl experiences, yoga, and more.
Each of these activities is designed to help guests reconnect with themselves and the land, offering an immersive and relaxing off-grid sanctuary experience.
The Zen Dome Experience
My favorite feature of our stay was the Zen Dome. The hexagon clear dome allowed us to slept under heated blankets while enjoying a breathtaking view of the starry sky. The dome’s design combines comfort and immersion in nature, offering a truly unique off-grid sanctuary experience. Would I stay in the Zen Dome again. Yes! In a heartbeat!
A Touch of Star Wars
For Star Wars fans, Outpost X is an immersive haven. The property features elements like Sand Cruisers and space-inspired gear, creating an ambiance that feels straight out of a galaxy far, far away. This thematic touch adds to the off-grid retreat vibe, combining nostalgia with nature.
We had the best time on the cruisers despite the wind. You can check out lots of on property structures. If you are an artist, there is a call for installations! You can check that out on their website.
Amenities and Social Spaces
The spa was closed during the off-season, although there was one hot tub open. I was just too cold to dare get in it. We explored the other social areas, including the Cantina, Game Room, and Kaan Lounge. These communal spaces gave us the chance to connect with fellow travelers and enjoy the distinctive atmosphere of the secluded sanctuary.
Check out all of these spaces in my youtube video (link).
Final Thoughts
Our visit to Outpost X was a perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and nostalgia. Whether you’re a Star Wars fan or someone seeking a secluded sanctuary to unwind, this retreat has something unique to offer. For a more detailed account of our trip and helpful tips, be sure to check out my full video on YouTube.
Also check out options they have like the culinary experience or renting cosplay clothing!
Oh, and if you don’t like the extreme cold or heat, I would check out the spring and fall months. I think those would be the best times to go experience this off-grid sanctuary experience. For more information on Outpost X, visit their official website at outpost-x.com
The Possibilities 6 in. x 9 in. hardbound notebook has completely transformed how I embrace my year of dreaming big, setting goals, and exploring new opportunities. While digital tools and printables are great, I quickly realized I wanted something more. That’s when I decided to create a 6×9 hardbound book—a journal that would help me stay inspired no matter where I go.
Why Choose a Hardbound Book?
At first, I considered sticking with digital options, but I knew I needed something more tangible. I already created some digital options here. A Possibilities notebook not only provides a structured space for reflection but also offers a sense of permanence that digital files sometimes lack.
Moreover, having a durable and portable book means I can take it with me wherever I go. Whether I’m at a coffee shop, traveling, or simply sitting at home, this guided reflection book keeps all my ideas in one place. Plus, there’s something special about physically writing things down—it makes goal-setting and reflection feel even more intentional.
What’s Inside the Possibilities Hardbound Notebook?
To make this book as useful as possible, I carefully structured it to balance guidance and flexibility. Inside, you’ll discover:
✔ 20 sections, each with six thought-provoking questions ✔ Bucket list pages to inspire big dreams and exciting goals ✔ Journaling pages for reflection, creativity, and personal insights ✔ A beautifully designed layout to make the experience enjoyable
Each section is thoughtfully designed to help you gain clarity, explore new ideas, and take meaningful action. Whether you’re brainstorming future projects, setting life goals, or simply reflecting on the day, this goal-setting notebook gives you the perfect space to do it.
Making It Available Through Amazon
Once I completed the design, I wanted to ensure that anyone who wanted a copy could get one easily. Instead of dealing with large print runs and shipping logistics, I decided to self-publish through Amazon. This way, the book is always available, and you can order it anytime without worrying about stock limitations.
Additionally, Amazon’s print-on-demand service ensures that each book is printed fresh and shipped directly to you, making the process seamless and hassle-free. I show some of putting it up on Amazon in the youtube video (link).
How I Designed This Guided Journal
Of course, designing this book was one of the most exciting parts of the process! I used a combination of Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator to bring everything together. First, I created the layout in InDesign. This ensured that each page was clean, visually appealing, and easy to use. Then, I incorporated artwork and refined the details using Illustrator and Photoshop.
For those who love seeing the behind-the-scenes process, I’ve created a video walkthrough where I show exactly how I designed it. Watch the full video here: (link)
Get Your Possibilities Year Hardbound Book Today!
If you’re ready to start your own Possibilities Year, you can grab your copy today! I’ve also gathered all my Possibilities Year videos and resources in one place, so you can explore more about this exciting journey. Find out more about that by going to www.designsuitecourses.com/dailyplanner.
I truly believe that when we take the time to write down our dreams, set goals, and reflect on our journey, amazing things happen. This notebook is more than just a journal. It’s a tool to help you unlock new opportunities and create a life filled with purpose. I hope it inspires you as much as it has inspired me!Want to watch more of the possibility videos? I’ve always loved dreaming big, setting goals, and exploring new possibilities. That’s why, when I started building my possibilities printables set, I knew it needed to be more than just a planner. Instead, it had to be a guide for intentional living. From the start, this project felt like an invitation to imagine, plan, and take action. In fact, I even created a full video on my initial design process—watch it here.
A Printable Set Designed for Possibilities
To bring the magic of the possibilities printables set into daily life, I carefully designed a 20-page printable collection that blends beauty with functionality. Not only does it help with organization, but it also serves as a tool for self-discovery and transformation.
Inside, you’ll find 20 sections, each containing five thought-provoking questions to help you: ✔ Discover what truly excites you ✔ Identify opportunities you might be overlooking ✔ Gain clarity on what you want to create ✔ Take real, actionable steps toward your dreams
Because of this structure, it’s more than just a planner—it’s a roadmap to personal growth.
Blending Old & New Art
When creating this project, I knew the visual elements needed to be just as inspiring as the content itself. For this reason, I decided to mix old designs with new illustrations created in Illustrator on the iPad. This blend of past and present artwork gave the final product a unique and meaningful touch.
Furthermore, to ensure a polished and professional layout, I built the entire possibilities printables set in Adobe InDesign. As a result, the pages are not only beautiful but also easy to use. If you enjoy seeing behind-the-scenes design work, you’ll love my Sweet Life of a Designer video—watch it here.
Want to Grab These Printables?
If you’re ready to explore your own possibilities, you can download the printables set and find all related resources in one convenient place: www.designsuitecourses.com/dailyplanner.
Ultimately, writing down dreams, reflecting on choices, and exploring creativity opens the door to new opportunities. Because of that, I poured my heart into this project, and I hope it helps you unlock fresh possibilities in your own life
This year, I started something exciting: my very own Book of Possibilities. Inspired by my friend Natali and the movie The Last Holiday, this creative project has quickly become one of my favorite ways to dream big and stay inspired.
In the movie, Queen Latifah’s character creates a “Book of Possibilities” to imagine a life filled with adventure and fulfillment. By the end of the movie, her book evolves into a “Book of Realities.” That idea stuck with me, and I knew I wanted to create my own version.
The concept of a Book of Possibilities isn’t just about dreaming; it’s about visualizing a life filled with purpose and creativity. This book is my personal space to reflect, plan, and capture ideas that might one day turn into reality.
To begin, I decided my Book of Possibilities would hold not only my dreams but also my New Year’s goals. Combining these two elements felt natural since they both represent things I hope to accomplish.
For the materials, I kept it simple. I grabbed stickers, folders, clear pages, markers, colored paper, and my trusty selfie printer. The simplicity allowed me to focus on the creative process rather than overcomplicating the setup.
My selfie printer became a key tool in making my book feel personal. I printed vibrant 4×6 photos of dream destinations, inspiring quotes, and even some snapshots from my daily life. The photos added personality and made each page come alive. If you’d like to use similar materials, check out the links on my planner page at www.designsuitecourses.com/dailyplanner.
Finding Joy in the Creative Process
What I loved most about starting my Book of Possibilities was the freedom it gave me to play. Unlike many of my other creative projects, this one didn’t require structure or perfection. I let my imagination run wild.
One of my favorite moments was creating the cover. I went all in with a maximalist style, combining stickers, markers, and letters. It was refreshing to take a step back from the computer and work with my hands. The tactile experience of crafting reminded me of why I fell in love with creativity in the first place.
My kids even got involved. They watched me cutting and gluing in the kitchen and decided to join in. They made their own books, complete with stickers, drawings, and photos. It turned into a family project, with laughter and a wonderfully messy workspace.
Why the Book of Possibilities Works
The beauty of a Book of Possibilities lies in its flexibility. It’s a space for dreams, plans, and reflections. Think of it as a vision board you can continuously build on. Unlike traditional vision boards, it’s portable, expandable, and can grow with you throughout the year.
I chose an 8.5×11 size for my book because I wanted enough space to print pages directly from my computer. My friend Natali opted for a smaller A5 planner size, which is great for those who want something more compact. No matter the size, the purpose is the same: to create a space where possibilities come to life.
Pages to Inspire Your Creativity
If you’re thinking about starting your own Book of Possibilities, here are some ideas to spark your creativity:
Organize by Themes
Creative Exploration: sketches, mood boards, and brainstorming.
Planning and Goals: to-do lists, timelines, and step-by-step plans.
Personal Growth: reflections, affirmations, and vision statements.
Future Focus: travel dreams, career aspirations, and big “what-ifs.”
Incorporate Visuals Use photos, magazine clippings, or drawings to bring your pages to life. Visual elements make the book more engaging and exciting to revisit.
Add Affirmations and Quotes Dedicate pages to uplifting messages that keep you motivated.
Get Crafty Experiment with stickers, washi tape, markers, and anything else that inspires you.
Make It Fun This book is yours. Let go of perfection and focus on capturing your dreams and ideas in a way that feels authentic to you.
Turning Dreams into Reality
The most exciting part of a Book of Possibilities is seeing how dreams can slowly evolve into reality. This year, I’ve already started planning trips I added to my book, including some dream destinations I’ve been wanting to visit.
As I continue to add to my book, I’m noticing patterns in what inspires me. Whether it’s a new creative project or a personal goal, this book helps me stay focused on what truly matters.
A Project You Can Start Anytime
Although I began my Book of Possibilities at the start of the year, it’s a project you can start anytime. The beauty of this concept is its timelessness. Whenever inspiration strikes, you can dive in and start creating.
I plan to share updates on how my book evolves throughout the year, so stay tuned! If you decide to create your own, I’d love to hear about it. Let’s make this year a celebration of creativity, possibility, and joy.

The Sweet Life Designer Summit is just around the corner, and we couldn’t be more excited. This year, we’re thrilled to announce not one but two incredible summits. These events are designed to spark creativity, foster connections, and provide invaluable insights into the world of design and making.
September 9-11, 2025 The Design Suite Maker Conference (Link coming soon!)
Both summits promise a blend of inspiration, education, and creativity. Whether you’re a seasoned designer or just starting, there’s something for everyone.
Watch the entire behind the scenes of our photoshoot here: (youtube link coming soon)
Behind the Scenes: Our Photoshoot
To get ready for the upcoming summits, we scheduled a photoshoot to capture the excitement and energy of what’s to come. Let me tell you, things didn’t go exactly as planned.
I specifically booked a studio with a pink wall. But when I arrived, there was no pink wall in sight! Was it frustrating? Yes. Did we let it stop us? Absolutely not.
We improvised with the other colors available and made it work. Adaptability is key, right? I brought several outfit options to keep the vibe fresh and fun. We also added a sweet touch—literally—with an assortment of treats to use as props. From colorful candies to pastel pastries, they brought an extra layer of playfulness to the shoot.
Despite the hiccups, the photoshoot turned out beautifully. It’s a reminder that sometimes, when things don’t go as planned, they can still turn out better than expected.
Why These Summits Matter
The Sweet Life of A Designer Summit in April is all about celebrating creativity. It’s a free event aimed at bringing designers together to share ideas, learn, and grow. Whether you’re curious about starting your design journey or you’re a pro looking for fresh inspiration, this summit is for you.
Then, in September, we’re hosting The Design Suite Maker Conference. This event will dive deeper into the business side of design and making. Expect hands-on workshops, expert panels, and plenty of opportunities to network with like-minded creatives.
A Year Full of Creativity and Fun
2025 is shaping up to be an extraordinary year. Between these summits and everything else we have planned, I can’t wait to share this journey with you.
We’re committed to making this year one to remember, and we hope you’ll join us. Stay tuned for updates on the September event and additional surprises along the way.
Let’s make 2025 a year full of growth, creativity, and connection. See you at the summits!
The sweet life of an artist date is my focus this year. Life often feels chaotic and hectic, doesn’t it? It’s easy to lose track of time for yourself. But in 2025, I’m changing that.
I’ve started a personal endeavor called my artist date. Inspired by Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way, this weekly practice is my gift to myself. Each week, I’ll take time to explore, create, and enjoy art without any pressure or expectations.
Finding Inspiration Through Artist Dates
These artist dates are all about sparking creativity. Some weeks, I’ll try something new to challenge myself. Other times, I’ll visit a new place or experiment with a medium I’ve never used before. It could even be as simple as sketching outside in the sunshine.
This isn’t about creating something perfect or productive. It’s about reconnecting with the joy of art and letting creativity flow freely.
Kicking Off with Fresh Art
For my first artist date of 2025, I chose to make physical art. As a designer, I spend a lot of time creating digital work. My usual projects are large and often time-sensitive, leaving little room for experimentation or long-term endeavors.
This year, I’m carving out time for projects that may take weeks to complete. I’m also allowing myself to create without a clear purpose—something that feels backward to my usual approach.
Breaking My Own Rules
If you’ve taken my Design Suite program or a business class at the University of Arts & Design, you know I value purposeful creativity. For over 17 years, I’ve built my career around designs that serve meaningful goals.
But I’ve learned that stepping away from that mindset can be refreshing. Creating for joy, not purpose, helps me recharge and reignite my passion for art. It’s where new ideas form, and creativity has the freedom to breathe.
Overcoming Challenges and Perfectionism
One challenge has been letting go of perfectionism. I rely on digital tools for precise designs, and shifting to physical art feels daunting. Yet, this discomfort pushes me to grow and embrace imperfections.
In my bootcamps, I encourage others to let go of perfectionism (www.designsuitecourses.com/designbootcamp). While I’m not a perfectionist, I tend to be critical of my work. Creating physical art challenges me in new ways and helps me embrace flaws as part of the process.
Sharing Art with My Family
Another reason I love these artist dates is that I get to involve my kids. It’s a chance for us to explore creativity together, especially in ways their school might not provide. While I’m not great at structured art time, these moments nurture their imagination and ours as a family.
Pushing Boundaries in 2025
This year, I’m embracing discomfort to grow as an artist. Physical art feels unfamiliar and messy compared to digital work, but it’s worth the effort. For fine artists who avoid digital creation, I’d suggest trying the thing that feels most uncomfortable—it’s often where growth happens.

It’s 2025, and I’m excited to share something new: building my new barn designer office! This year, I want to pull back the curtain and let you see what it’s like to be a designer, CEO, artist, and creator. Along the way, you’ll meet my team, experience the challenges, and enjoy the sweet moments of my journey.
To kick things off, I’m thrilled to show you a project that’s been in the works throughout 2024: transforming my backyard into a brand-new workspace.
The New Barn Designer Office
I can’t wait to reveal the details of my new barn designer office! This project has been a dream for years. When I started as a designer, my workspace was a tiny desk in my bedroom. (I even went scrolling through my old Instagram feed to find photos, but no luck!)
At the start of 2024, I hired a contractor and dove into permits. By summer, the backyard was a construction zone. We dug up the yard to run electrical and plumbing lines and moved old sheds to make room for the barn.
Getting Started
Early on, we poured concrete for the foundation. I also decided to add an outdoor shower for the pool—a fun and practical touch. The groundwork took up most of the summer, but progress felt rewarding.
In the fall, construction on the barn began. The structure, built from a kit, measures 24 ft by 16 ft and even includes an attic area. Seeing it come to life made all the groundwork worth it.
Overcoming Delays
As with many construction projects, delays crept in. What was supposed to finish early turned into a months-long extension. Still, the excitement grew as the barn took shape. The attic, taller than expected, became a pleasant surprise!
This project is far from over, but I’ll keep sharing updates. I can’t wait to show you the final reveal of my new barn designer office! Watch the full video on YouTube: https://youtu.be/oTdUZLnExnM

Let’s Get Started!
Creating a watercolor sticker sheet can be a fantastic way to turn your physical artwork into beautiful, tangible products. In this guide, I’ll walk you through the essentials of designing your own watercolor sticker sheet, including tips for spacing, digitizing, and achieving a cohesive look. Whether you’re a seasoned artist or just exploring stickers for the first time, this process will help you bring your art to life in a unique way.
Step 1: Gather Your Supplies To start, you’ll need watercolor paints, brushes, watercolor paper, and a paper towel. These basics will be your tools for creating individual designs that work together harmoniously on a sticker sheet. For the example I’ll show you, I created this sticker sheet during a Die Cut and 3D Design Technology class at the University of Arts & Design.
Step 2: Plan Your Design When designing a watercolor sticker sheet, focus on creating isolated images that visually connect. This is where theme and color play a big role. To make the sticker sheet cohesive, keep your color palette consistent and choose designs that share a theme, even if it’s subtle. Think about leaving adequate space between each design, as this will help later when you’re adding die lines in software.
Step 3: Leave Space for Die Lines Spacing between elements is essential. While it might seem like a minor detail, leaving enough space around each design ensures clean die lines. After scanning, you can always make additional spacing adjustments in Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator if needed.
Step 4: Add Fine Details If you want to add pen details, this is the time to do it. Pen lines can add contrast and depth to your stickers, and for certain projects, it’s a fun touch. While some sticker sheets are entirely digital with added fonts or quotes, physical pen work can bring a handmade feel to the final design.
Step 5: Digitize and Refine in Software (not shown in the video) Once your painting is dry, scan it in to digitize the sticker sheet. I recommend Adobe Photoshop for tweaking spacing and Illustrator for creating die lines. Adjusting the artwork digitally allows for more precision and customization, which is especially helpful if some designs need additional separation or refinement.
Creating watercolor sticker sheets allows you to work in a physical medium while also learning how to digitize art for production. If you’re interested in a more structured approach, my Die Cut and 3D Design Technology course at the University of Arts & Design teaches you how to design specifically for machines like Cricut and Silhouette. For those interested in launching a creative business, check out my Design Bootcamp at designsuitecourses.com/designbootcamp for a comprehensive introduction to building a design business or apply to the University of Arts and Design at www.uad.education.

If you’re dreaming about starting an art business, then this post is for you! Here are the five essential hacks every designer and artist needs to know to launch a successful business in 2025. From planning clarity to leveraging AI, these tips will help you hit the ground running. Ready to dive in? Let’s get started!
Watch the entire youtube video here or just below: (link coming soon)
Hack #1: Planning for Clarity
When starting an art business, having a clear plan is crucial. Many creatives make detailed plans, but fewer plan with the goal of clarity. A mix of daily and dream planning can help keep your creative juices flowing while keeping your goals in focus. Personally, I use the Design Suite Daily Planner to stay motivated and organized. You can find it at designsuitecourses.com/dailyplanner if you want to try it out!
Hack #2: Leverage AI & Automation
As we move into 2025, embracing AI is essential. From Adobe Firefly to Canva’s AI features, the smartest creatives are using AI tools to save time and focus on the creative side of their business. When starting an art business, consider AI to help with repetitive tasks like generating mockups, automating social media posts, or speeding up logo design. Instead of getting stuck in routine tasks, you can focus on what really matters—your art.
Hack #3: Build a Working Digital Portfolio
Building a portfolio is vital, but why not let your portfolio work for you? Sell your designs as you showcase them! Platforms like Etsy and Amazon allow you to sell and gain valuable insights into what works. To learn more about creating a portfolio that sells, check out my Design Bootcamp at designsuitecourses.com/designbootcamp, where we focus on selecting the right platforms for your work.
Hack #4: Embrace Short-Form Video Content
Short-form video is here to stay, and it’s perfect for getting your art out into the world. Platforms like TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts are fantastic places to share quick, engaging glimpses of your process. Show off a timelapse, a sketch, or a behind-the-scenes look at your workspace. This type of content is quick to make and, most importantly, shareable. Get your art out there and let it spread!
Hack #5: Network & Collaborate
Finally, networking is key. Join online communities, attend industry events, or collaborate with other creatives. Networking opens doors to clients, collaborators, and mentors who can help you grow. In the last year, I’ve spoken at over 10 events to connect with others and share my own work. Networking is essential when starting an art business, so put yourself out there!
And there you have it—the top five hacks for starting an art business in 2025! Whether you’re most excited to build a portfolio or leverage AI, these hacks will set you up for success. For even more tips on starting an art business, subscribe to our updates. Let’s make 2025 the year your creative dreams come to life!

Today, I’m excited to share a unique “Design Around the World” experience at my youngest sister’s Indian wedding. This celebration took place at the historic Hayes Mansion in San Jose, California. From colorful decor to intricate details, it was a designer’s dream—and an endless source of inspiration!
Our journey began as we traveled to San Jose, California. Hayes Mansion, an incredible estate dating back to 1905, was the perfect setting for this memorable event. With its Mediterranean Revival architecture, intricate woodwork, and grand furnishings, the mansion brought a sense of elegance to every corner.
As we explored, the mansion’s unique details stood out. From exquisite wallpapers to the antique wood finishes, each space sparked design inspiration. The vibrant colors and classic architecture set the stage for the wedding, blending historic beauty with the lively energy of the celebration.
The Sangeet: A Night of Colors, Music, and Dance
The wedding festivities began with the Sangeet, held on Saturday night. We had just arrived in town, rushing to wrap ourselves in sarees—a first for some of us! My sister Caitlin, a fashion and graphic designer, designed the event’s graphics, including posters, signage, and henna stations. Her unique style added a personal, artistic touch to every element.
The energy at the Sangeet was unforgettable. Guests arrived from across the country, and the night was filled with music, dancing, and laughter. Family and friends enjoyed the henna, delicious food, and beautifully crafted decorations. Every detail was vibrant, reflecting the joy and excitement of the evening.
The Wedding Ceremony: Tradition and Celebration
Sunday brought the main wedding ceremony. We started early to prepare, with Caitlin looking stunning in an outfit accented by fresh flowers woven into her hair. The ceremony took place outdoors under a bright California sun, casting a glow over everyone’s colorful attire. Surrounded by ornate decor and blooming flowers, the setting was picture-perfect.
The ceremony was filled with tradition and family involvement. A live saxophone and drum accompanied the event, filling the air with music. My mom, sisters, and I had the honor of participating in several ceremonies, which felt both beautiful and meaningful. Each moment celebrated not only Caitlin and her husband but also the joining of two families and two cultures.
The Final Touches: Memories and Inspiration
Looking back, this “Design Around the World” journey was a feast for the senses. From the wedding attire to the stunning event decor, every detail was inspiring. This vibrant celebration reminded me of the beauty of blending tradition with creativity.
If you’re as inspired by colors, patterns, and rich decor as I am, don’t miss my other “Design Around the World” episodes. Subscribe to my channel for more design adventures, and tell me in the comments if you’ve ever attended a wedding like this. I’d love to hear about your experiences!
When my family and I arrived in Kauai, the “Garden Isle,” we were ready for an adventure filled with design inspiration and natural beauty. Known for its lush rainforests, serene beaches, and towering cliffs, Kauai is unlike anywhere else. The island has a unique vibe—quieter than Maui or Oahu—making it the perfect escape. Each corner of Kauai seemed to offer Kauai design inspiration, blending laid-back design and functional beauty that reflects the island’s heart and personality.
Our journey started right at the airport, where a colorful sign with a bold serif font for “Kauai” greeted us. The choice of cursive for the rest of the text and the warm colors instantly set a welcoming, island feel. These subtle design touches hinted at the artistry and Kauai design inspiration we would see across the island.
Kauai Beach at Sheraton Kauai Coconut Hotel
Relaxing at the Sheraton Kauai Coconut Hotel
For our stay, we chose the Sheraton Kauai Coconut Hotel, which offered all we needed for both relaxation and fun. With its easy beach access, inviting pools, and delightful dining spots, it was ideal. Traveling in September meant fewer tourists, making our beach days quiet and peaceful. The hotel even had torches and bonfires in the evenings, creating a cozy, welcoming atmosphere. In every detail, the hotel’s design seemed perfectly in tune with Kauai design inspiration, blending effortlessly with the island’s natural beauty.
Taking in Kauai’s Beach and Wildlife Design
One of our favorite spots was Poipu Beach, known for its family-friendly atmosphere and local wildlife. We were lucky enough to see two turtles resting on the sand and even a monk seal. To protect these beautiful creatures, Kauai’s wildlife team placed signs around them, designed with bright yellow backgrounds and seal silhouettes that instantly communicated caution. These signs were both functional and visually appealing, keeping visitors informed and respectful, and adding another layer of Kauai design inspiration.
Even the beach safety signs had a unique touch, with bold fonts and weathered shapes giving them character. The “Warning” sign, in particular, stood out with a distinct wave silhouette, making it easy to spot and understand. Every detail seemed to be considered, reflecting the island’s balance of beauty and safety, and adding to the Kauai design inspiration that guided the way.
Exploring Kauai’s Local Shops and Eclectic Signage
Kauai’s shops and markets added more charm to our trip. One memorable spot was a small, family-owned fruit stand, decked out with handmade signs and a storefront shaped like a pineapple. Despite the mismatched “Coconut Corner” signs, the overall effect was welcoming and playful. The hand-painted letters added a touch of vintage flair, while the thick, puffy letters made everything feel inviting and added to our Kauai design inspiration.
We also spotted creative designs at various eateries, like the playful logos at Island Taco and Monico’s restaurant. Each sign seemed to reflect the unique flavor of Kauai’s local businesses, from the hand-drawn details to vibrant color choices that blended beautifully with the tropical surroundings, offering fresh Kauai design inspiration in every detail.
The Majestic Views of Waimea Canyon
Our Kauai adventure would not have been complete without a visit to Waimea Canyon. Known as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” this awe-inspiring sight offered breathtaking views of red and green layers of volcanic rock. Even on a rainy day, the views were unforgettable. Though we opted to admire the scenery from lookouts rather than hike, the canyon’s natural design provided endless Kauai design inspiration. Every twist and turn of the landscape seemed to tell a story of Kauai’s powerful and peaceful beauty.
Reflecting on Kauai’s Functional, Island-Infused Design
Throughout our trip, I was impressed by how Kauai design inspiration seamlessly fit the island lifestyle. At our resort, we received keycard bracelets, making it easy to enjoy the beach without worrying about losing room keys. The simplicity of these small design details made our experience feel easy and worry-free. Even at the beach, the minimalist pool chairs and uncluttered surroundings highlighted Kauai’s emphasis on simple, functional beauty.
Food Truck on Kauai
This trip showed me that Kauai’s charm is about so much more than its scenery. The island’s thoughtful design details, from handcrafted signs to seamless functionality, created an atmosphere where nature and creativity coexisted beautifully, inspiring Kauai design inspiration for travelers, artists, and nature lovers alike.
Signage and local information at the Kauai Airport

Why Make Art That Sells is a Must-Read for Artists
If you’re looking to grow your art career, Make Art That Sells is the book that can transform your journey. The moment I picked it up, I knew this compact book held the key to unlocking the potential of my creative work. Written by Carina Gardner, Make Art That Sells not only provides practical advice but also challenges the outdated “starving artist” myth. As someone who once believed in that myth, I can say this book was truly a game-changer.
Right from the start, Make Art That Sells offers clear, actionable steps to build a thriving art business. It’s designed for artists at every stage, whether you’re just starting or looking to expand. I personally began reading this book when I was still figuring out how to turn my artistic passion into something more than a hobby. The book walked me through each stage of the journey, from identifying my unique style to targeting the right audience.
One of the standout features of Make Art That Sells is the formula that Carina introduces. This formula enabled me to see my art through the lens of a business, rather than just as creative expression. In doing so, it helped me evaluate my work critically and identify new market opportunities. More importantly, the book taught me how to ask myself essential questions: What medium best suits my work? What themes resonate with my audience? These questions became the foundation for defining my own artistic voice.
Additionally, Carina’s step-by-step guidance makes the process of selling art feel attainable. She breaks down the complexities of the art market into bite-sized, actionable strategies. Whether you’re focused on painting, digital art, or another medium, you’ll learn how to position your work for success. One of my favorite aspects of the book is how Carina simplifies what can often feel like an overwhelming process, helping you see the bigger picture of your art business.
For me, the Make Art That Sells formula was a major turning point. It completely shifted how I approach my art career. Before, I saw my creative work as something separate from business—now I view it as an integral part of a sustainable career. I no longer feel like I have to sacrifice financial stability to do what I love. Instead, the book has helped me build a bridge between passion and profit.
Looking back, I realize how much Make Art That Sells has influenced my path as a designer. It’s not just a book—it’s a roadmap that helped me gain clarity about my goals, my audience, and how to grow a successful business. It also reignited my joy for creating, knowing that my art can both inspire and sustain me.
If you’re ready to take your art to the next level, Make Art That Sells is the perfect companion. It equips you with the tools and mindset needed to turn your creative dreams into a thriving, meaningful business. And that, in my experience, has been priceless.

Direct-to-film (DTF) printing trend has emerged as a game-changer in the world of garment customization. 2025 promises even more advancements. Heat Press Nation highlights DTF’s rising popularity and its growing impact on custom garment printing.
You can listen to the full episode on the Make and Design Podcast with Carina Gardner. Her interview with Jared Barbosa from Heat Press Nation revealed what to expect in 2025.
Listen to Episode 488 What is Hot in 2024 and 2025 and Black Friday Deals with Heat Press Nation here: (link coming soon) www.makeandesign.com
DTF printing has set itself apart from other methods with impressive durability and quality. Unlike traditional techniques, DTF creates vibrant prints that resist fading and cracking. Heat Press Nation describes DTF as “the biggest shift in garment customization,” especially because it produces sharp colors on dark fabrics, where sublimation falls short.
By applying a white base layer under each design, DTF ensures colors pop on darker materials, offering a crisp look that print shops love. This feature opens up creative possibilities and produces results that make custom garments stand out.
Broader Customization Capabilities
DTF printing goes beyond shirts, expanding customization to items like hats, bags, and even non-fabric surfaces. Heat Press Nation explains that this versatility unlocks new revenue streams for print shops and hobbyists alike. For smaller shops, DTF presents a simple way to diversify products without investing in a dedicated printer. They can order custom DTF transfers and apply them with a heat press—an ideal solution for businesses or startups on a budget.
Affordability and Accessibility
DTF’s affordability also drives its appeal. Today, entry-level DTF printers start at around $2,400, creating an accessible pathway for small businesses eager to enter the custom print market. Heat Press Nation points out that with high reliability and low costs, DTF has attracted new users who value high-quality, full-color prints without the hefty price tag of other methods.
A Promising Future for DTF Printing

Love nutcracker themed holiday crafting? This Christmas craft focuses on holiday fun with the Nutcracker, Soldier, Rat King, Clara, and the Sugar Plum Fairy. It’s the season to get crafty with your die-cutting machine and deck out your space for Christmas! This year, I’m inspired by the Nutcracker and designed an easy stacked box trio that brings holiday cheer with minimal effort.
Holiday fun comes to life in this project with characters like the Nutcracker, Soldier, Rat King, Clara, and the Sugar Plum Fairy, each featured on different sides of the boxes. By designing five total characters, I arranged them across two box sets, though you could select just four for a single box set.
Creating this project with Nutcracker characters was such a joy! Clara and the Sugar Plum Fairy add plenty of charm, and the mischievous Rat King and steadfast Soldier bring playful energy to this holiday decor.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
Silhouette or Cricut Machine: Perfect for precision cutting
14-inch square boxes: Find them at any office supply store
12-inch vinyl in festive colors
Boxing tape: Secures your boxes in place for the season
Why You’ll Love This Project:
This Nutcracker Stacked Box Trio is perfect for creating holiday decor that’s not only festive but also practical. Set it up for Christmas, then easily fold and store these boxes away after the season ends. It’s a quick, space-saving holiday decor solution!
Want a smaller project? Make mini Nutcracker paper dolls or use small wooden cubes to create kid-friendly, stackable Nutcrackers! These Nutcracker decorations are versatile, fun, and adaptable to any space.
Want to see how it’s done? Catch my full YouTube tutorial here and get ready to add some Nutcracker magic to your Christmas decor! Check out the youtube video instructions as shown below!
Why I Love This Project:
This Nutcracker stacked box trio brings together everything I love about holiday decorating with my die-cutting machine: it’s festive, customizable, and easy to store. Creating Christmas decor with Silhouette or Cricut machines always feels special, and the Nutcracker theme adds an iconic touch that can be tailored in so many colors and styles. The best part? Additionally, these 14-inch boxes can be quickly set up, folded down, and stored for the rest of the year.
Whether you’re crafting small paper Nutcracker dolls, designing them for wooden cubes, or going all-out with the full stacked box look, this project is fun, flexible, and brings a cheerful holiday vibe to any room!

Tracey Rinaldo, an entrepreneur and creative designer, met with Carina Gardner and discussed her path to profit with her small business being brought to life through the tips and tricks of Design Suite. Tracey has a unique story tailored to those who are already small business owners, creators of physical and digital art, and people who are looking for the resources necessary to take their creative dreams to the next level.
“My journey has kind of been long and twisted,” Tracey explains, “I’ve been a creative all my life, I just never followed it… This whole thing started with a hair bow, [my daughter and I] went to a little craft show, but I couldn’t let her just sell a hair bow, so I took a bunch of things that I was sewing and then after that I was like ‘I would really love to transition from what I’m doing now to being creative full-time, because this is where my heart is. So I didn’t know where to go, what to do, I just had my little small business side, but I knew I couldn’t replace my income with handmade stuff, I just didn’t have enough time in the day… So I took a few courses… somehow you just appeared, and then I started looking into it, and I was a little bit hesitant because I had been in other online courses and it was just like so many people, so busy… So I ended up in your bootcamp… you acknowledged me and I was like ‘what?!’… I had all the pieces except it was like my puzzle was missing something, and the missing something was selling things and getting off the ground that way. So it was just a bonus that your courses are amazing. I’m in Design Suite and the Mastermind and there are a zillion courses for everything, I seriously can do everything you’ve got.”
As Tracey continued to explain her starting story in the Design Suite program over the podcast, it was nothing short of remarkable. The passion and desire were there to do more with the small business she had started. That’s how she found success in Design Suite and how she started making money.
“I started my business in 2022, so I spent that first year/year and a half just kind of floundering… and then it wasn’t until July that I took the bootcamp, so at the end of July is when I found you. And since July, it’s been a night and day difference,” Tracey states to Carina. Design Suite truly is the tool needed to give people that jumpstart and action on implementing their dreams to real life. Tracey found more effective ways of putting her business out there through the tips and tricks taught in the bootcamps and Design Suite programs.
Tracey also talks about the growth and experience gained from attending craft fairs. “The only one that’s going to get me out there is me… Every show that I do I take something away from it,” she explains. At these fairs, she began to show and display her favorite designs to sell, the custom pet portraits. Tracey has always loved drawing animals, and choosing to further her business by making portraits for people has not only been extremely fun for her, but her target market benefits greatly from the personalized items they receive when they buy from her. Design Suite was able to give her that confidence to keep going to the shows, and even when no sales are made, to leave with more knowledge and insights gained from the people she has met. Her resilience and willingness to keep trying has brought her great fulfillment and success through her journey, and that really is the key. As Carina explains in the podcast, “You’re getting information faster than if you were on just a platform.” Those in person events prove determination to learn more and get your business out there.
Overall, Tracey Rinaldo’s interview on Carina Gardner’s podcast is a must-listen for anyone who is seeking the opportunity to make money off of their creative designs, and find ways to get their work seen by the world. Her story serves as a reminder that with dedication, resilience, and courage, anything is possible. Anyone can be a designer if they put their mind to it, and anyone can make money off of their creations if they are willing to put in the effort to make it happen. Design bootcamps and Design Suite are perfect resources to look into to make those dreams into realities!
