Design Inspiration from Travel from Austin to Tucson: CEO Masterminds and Educational Insights
I always find design inspiration from travel, and April 2025 was no exception. With back-to-back trips to Austin for a CEO Mastermind and then Tucson for the DEAC Annual Conference, I soaked in design ideas, business insights, and sunshine—what more could a designer ask for?

In Austin, I spent time with five of my favorite CEOs. This incredible group includes everyone from the president of a bank to a gymnastics facility owner. Because their industries vary so widely—franchise, wedding venues, manufacturing, corporate speaking—the conversations are electric. We dove into marketing strategies, retirement goals, and even economic forecasts.

Without fail, being around other driven entrepreneurs always stretches my mind. It reminds me that building a business is not a one-size-fits-all journey. Especially as a designer, these moments of expansion help me see new possibilities for growth and creativity.

Austin Design Details That Stood Out
Design-wise, Austin did not disappoint. Even our Airbnb had a super cool “Austin” sign that begged for photos. The city bursts with creative energy, and it shows in the typography everywhere. I especially loved the restaurant Anthem. Their logo was everywhere—walls, matchbooks, you name it—and it was brilliant branding.

And then there was Holey Moley, a putt-putt place with some of the most eclectic design choices I’ve ever seen. Think scrabble letters, a giant shark head, and even a toilet integrated into the holes! It was quirky, colorful, and a treasure trove of design inspiration from travel moments.
Besides masterminding, we shopped, laughed, and shared meals. I left Austin buzzing with creative travel ideas and deep appreciation for the amazing women I get to learn from.

Tucson: Where Education and Inspiration Meet
Next, I flew straight to Tucson for the DEAC Annual Conference. This was my second time attending, and it did not disappoint. As the University of Arts & Design (www.uad.education) continues to expand, I’m constantly searching for ways to improve student experiences. At DEAC, I met passionate university leaders who clearly love what they do.

Breakfast Among the Desert Beauty at Tohono Chul
Before the conference began, I had breakfast at the Tohono Chul Garden Bistro—a serene spot rich in natural beauty and local culture. Tohono Chul, which means “desert corner” in the Tohono O’odham language, serves as a botanical garden, cultural museum, and artistic hub. With its native plant gardens, soothing water features, and desert-inspired sculptures, the space was overflowing with design inspiration from travel. It was the perfect way to kick off a week of learning.

Learning, Leadership, and Looking Ahead
Tucson in April? Absolute perfection. The weather made everything feel even more magical. At the conference, I connected with college presidents and staff, discussed national policies, and better understood how current government movements will impact our university. I felt deeply grateful to be part of these important conversations, learning how other schools serve their students and communities.
Both Austin and Tucson gave me design-focused travel insights that will stick with me long after the suitcases are unpacked. Whether it’s through vibrant branding in a putt-putt course or the thoughtful way a garden bistro merges culture and creativity, design inspiration from travel keeps showing up—and I plan to keep chasing it.
